OT XPOST. Thieves at Work

I posted on another board about this, now I am posting here.

I have a dillemma. I love my job, it is fun and I am always busy when I am at work. BUT..we have a girl working there that has been stealing money from our tip jar. We tip share. Anyhow, management knows and has "talked" to her. The owners are not aware. What burns me the most is that she gets full time hours while the rest of us do'nt. It is just a little unfair in my opinion to keep a thief on payroll. She has admitted to this crime.

To make mattersworse, se was bragging the other day about her man "pimping" her out to another co worker. he was getting 50 dollars so this other guy could sleep with her!! AAGGHH!!

I am at a loss. I need my job. But I do have some integrity about me. I can't abide this behavor, and I want no part of it. I want to contact the owners as I am sure tey are unaware of this nasty business. I know that if I do I will likely get fired . What to do?

Mangaement and the theif should be fired.  Maybe management is on her payroll too.  You went thru chain of command and they did nothing so why not go to the owners.  It makes their place of business look bad.

Since I had something like this happen to me in Tampa, I will tell you what I was told to do and wish I had, but didn't.

If I were you, I would contact an attorney and explain the situation and tell him/her that you will likely get fired if you contact the owners.  Then, every conversation you hear...such as her bragging about getting pimped out...write it down and date it and especially write down who else was listening because they will want witnesses.  I had so much happen to me at Quest, but there were few witnesses.  However, there was one individual who was harrassing me horribly and even though HR knew he was trouble, they wouldn't do anything unless I had witnesses.  Luckily, one day another guy heard something that was said to me and it actually wasn't as bad as some of the things he said to me, but I had a witness and the man was fired and out of my hair.

I know what it's like to want to leave because of integrity, but sometimes that is hard when you need to earn a living.

Prostitution is illegal too, so that could also be an issue to discuss with the owners.  If you know them well enough, you could go talk with them and ask them not to mention you specifically but to speak with the other employees.  That's ANOTHER thing that happened at Quest when someone was misbehaving.  They sent someone in from Texas to speak with us individually.  We didn't know what was happening, but we were spoken with individually in private.  Afterwards, a few people were missing in action.

The best of luck to you, my friend.  I have quit jobs before because of integrity and then just about starved due to lack of money while the people with no integrity went about their merry way earning a good paycheck and suffering none at all while I suffered horribly.  However, I am now in a good place while I have no clue what is going on with the 'ol meanies now.

That's just my 2¢ worth,
Love,
Joni

OH Iris!!! PRAY!!! Before you do a thing, say anything...pray, pray pray. Allow God to go before you and do some work in the situation. I hate when things like this happen to people. We try hard to work hard for our employers and with our co-workers and there is always one or more that are willing to be dishonest and mean. Tough situation! I'm saying a prayer right now for you.

Yeah, Staci is right.  Management needs to go too.

Are there others in the company who feel as you do?  If you could all get together and go to the owners, that would go a long way towards resolving the situation.  The owners will probably appreciate your telling them.  After all, if the company goes down, they go down.  I know if I owned a company and this was happening in my place, I would want someone to tell them.  You could always write it all out nicely (typewritten, of course,) and mail it anonymously to the owners...

Thanks you guys. This has been on my mind for most of the weekend.
The really bad part is that no one else is willing to speak up. They all know, and they make nice because they need their jobs.

I do have an interview today at 1:30 pm. It is much closer to my house, so hopefully I will get it.

I do plan on contacting the owners. I feel it is only right that they know.

Document everything.  Dates, times, events, everything.  Retaliation in the work place is illegal and you could sue if they fired you in retaliation.  It's obvious that Management isn't going to do anything about it.  Is it possible to have someone trustworthy put the tip money under lock and key?  Our coffee fund is ALWAYS locked up.  We have way too many people milling about where I work and no need to tempt anyone.

As for the pimping her out...that's downright distasteful.  I can't believe someone would even brag about that.  She has no shame...or self respect.

You need to look deep within yourself to decide what course of action you choose to take, but if you do choose to contact management, be sure you have plenty of documentation AND witnesses (people who won't be afraid to back you up....nothing's worse than when you speak up and everyone else acts dumb).   Be certain of your decision and be prepared to follow through on it no matter how ugly it may get.  I am sorry to hear that you are having to deal with such an unscrupulous person in your work place.

Oh Renee,

I'm sorry that this is happening.  I agree with Stacy they both need to go.  I'll be keeping youin my prayers, maybe you'll get this other job and solve the issue.
