ahh troubles...
OK, you know how the topic comes up sometimes about seeing an overweight person on the street and wondering if you should approach them with the subject of WLS or not? Always a debatable question.
Anyhoo, how do you approach someone whom you think is sabotaging their WLS?
This person had the surgery years ago, looks well, and says that they've lost some more weight in the past couple of weeks. BUT they sit there with a Coke, not diet, eat sweets and pretty big meals. I know everyone's bodies react differently to foods, but I'm worried. If I ate the things this person ate yesterday for breakfast it would #1 take me all day or #2 kill me or wish I was dead from the suffering that would be afflicted upon me.
Do you approach the person tactfully, shake your head in wonder or do what I did and say, "Is that your COKE?!?!?! OMG, eating a whole sandwich would make me sick!!! Sugar doesn't bother you at all?????"
I don't always do right by my pouchy, but I try. I get in more than the recommended protein and I've been hit with low blood protein and iron this last check-up. It's a struggle and I know it always will be.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Gisela,
If you were to be a fly on the wall & watch what & how often I eat, you would fall off the wall. I do drink Coke, full sugared. I drink it over ice & pour less than 1/4 cup at a time. By the time I drink that, it has watered down. I am supposed to eat ever 2 hours, that's hard. I cannot handle just any food. I eat junk, I eat carbs. My Dr knows this & is happy that I do, because it means I AM getting calories in.
My taste buds have also changed so much, it ain't funny. NOTHING tatstes good! I have just recently been able to handle drinking water again & it's still not often I can drink it!
Granted, I cannot each much at a sitting, but I eat so often it is just crazy! I can eat a regular sandwich that I make at home, well, most of it.
Bottom line, you can only control what YOU do! If you say something, you run the risk of alienating your friend. Is it worth that? Only you can answer that. Your friend has to deal with her own issues.

Hi Bon,
Thanks for the input...sorry I had to leave the computer and couldnt get back to it until now. I understand that some people are able to tolerate different things. I was just worried and came to ya'll for advice.
Guess everyone has to use the tool they were given to the best of their ability.
Thanks for replying,

I watch people at what they eat. I have seen them back drinking real Coke and whatever else. I just wonder. I dont want to hurt anybodys feelings. I have taken a sip or two of Coke and it hurts me so i dont want to hurt so i dont try it anymore. They dont complain about the weight that they have gained back . I dont want to ever be fat again. it scares me.

I know what you mean about the Coke. Once I forgot to ask if the lady at the drive in if it WAS diet coke. Two swallows later, I had to pull off the highway I was so sick. I'm scared to be fat again, too. It's a struggle everyday to do what I have to do. I was just scared for my friend.
Thanks so much,
Gisela

You bring up a good topic. I think most people who are sabotaging their WLS are aware of it. Perhaps some underlying issues are hand. I personally struggle with it especially with sweets. I have a sweet tooth, plan and simple. I give into it sometimes, in fact, I feel like lately a little too much. But I think if someone were to call me on it, being a WLS themselves or just thinking they are being helpful, I would probably be defensive.
I think weight loss is a lot like religion in that we all have different paths, experiences, ideas, struggles, and knowledge to help us along our own personal journey.
Sometimes the best way to influence others is to be a good, loving example.
Just my opinion.
Peace, Nanci

Thanks Nanci,
I guess I'd be defensive, too. Glad I posted to the board to get some input before I put my foot in my mouth...wish I had a board for every other thing I end up putting my foot in my mouth for. What you said about wl being like religion and being a loving example really hit home. Guess I'll try that.
Thanks Again,
Gisela
