OT Dog Problem HELP
Hi Bama Board Friends
One of our nieghbors moved and left a dog to just run around and get in trouble because they couldn't get thier hands on him. We have tried everything we can think of to catch him,the first thing was to feed him in the dog pin and shut him in ,he jumped the fence then we tried traping him in the shed no doing. I have tried to make friends with him he will come up to me but when i try to pet him he will runaway. We have call the dog pound but they say we have to pin him up and they will come and get him.Is there anything else we can do to get him?
he has killed my brothers cat and got hold of mine. i don't want to have to shoot him he is so perty ,solid white with long fur but that is what going to happen to him because the nighbor up the hill has been shooting at him already
Thanks
Pamela D..

I would not shoot him but if he keeps to chasing the cows my neighbor will i have tried to keep him safe. When you have tried all you can and can't get any help from any one it is frusterating. I have even asked for tranquilizer for him but they won't do that.I have talked to the police who say there is nothing they can do. The vet told me they would just put him down even if we caught him because they could not handle him.I have tried to get my hands on him so i could find him a home. How can a person own a dog and not pet it and make it friendly they had three dogs and when they moved they got too of them and left him because they could not get their hands on him. Now he is killing peoples cats chasing cows and getting my dogs in trouble. I live on a farm and have had dogs most of my life and have never had to pin them up.The person that left the dog should be arestd for abandoning him in the firstplace. I used to fostter dogs and love animals but just can't seem to get through to this dog that i am not going to hurt him.I have 2 dog i adopted from the pound and love them to death one is a yellow lab mix and the other is a bulldog mix.

Would it be considered "abuse" if you could get a mild sedative to put in some food for him that would calm him down enough after he ate it so you could get a rope or something on him? Nothing to knock him out but just to lull him a bit?
Does animal control not have the catch pole or at least the big trap cage? Here in Blakely we have trap cages of different sizes where some food is put in the rear of it and when the animal goes in to eat it trips the door and they are inside. No harm to the animal and they can safely be moved.
Sad thing is if this dog is already killing animals it might be extremely hard to rehome or to rehabilitate him. Not impossible but difficult. Bob is a wildlife rehabilitator and has rehomed dogs, cats and birds too. Our favorite rescue was a "possum" named Snodgrass.

Most vets will not give you a sedative to give an animal like that because 1) you dont know how the dog will react to that sedative and where he will go once he takes it. and 2) how do you know for sure the right animal will get the sedative. As to ensuring the right animal gets the sedative, it is not placed in food and left out in the open. It is placed in a controlled environment.
Sedation is not freely used to capture a domestic pet. It is used as a last resort or as a measure when an animal has been harmed and/or is in danger of harming others.
Animal control told us to catch him and they would come and get him the police said they could do nothing unless he bit someone. The neighbor has new calves on the ground and if he starts killing them he will shoot him and that is what i am trying to keep from happening. if i could catch him i could find him a home no problem because he is such a perty dog ./he would have to go to a house with o catsI have raised calves, kitten puppies, squrrels, and even a dear on a bottle for awhile and a hawk that had a broken wing with the permison from wildlife ranger. the squerrle and dear we turned back into the wild the hawk never could fly so he was sent to wildelif refuge he flew into theelectric fence and broke his wing the squerrle ran up my leg and got on my shoulder and everytime i tried to put back in the tree he would jump on me so i could not leave him for the cats to get. the baby dear just wonder into the yard one day and never left he still comes and goes the squerrle is in the trees in the front yard i don't encourage him to come to me because of the dogs.but i can still hand feed him he has a girle friend that will eat out of my hand now. I try to tell people if they see a baby animal leave it alone and watch for a few days usualy the mother is watching from a spot where you can't see her if i don't see the mother in a few days and the baby is not doing to good i will step in and take care of it.
I think the neighbor who left him should be sedated then pinned up for a while.
What they have done is animal abuse and cruelty! I feel for you. I would hate to watch him live out what is probably a ill-fated life. One of the sad things about living in the country is having to watch careless people neglect, leave, or dump dogs on properties to die knowing that little can be done for them.
