Compassion verses empathy

Compassion is feeling sorrow or the sufferings of others, followed by a need to help,  Included in the feelings are those of pity and sympathy.

Empathy is the projection of one's own personality into the personality of another in order to understand him or her better, ability to share in another's emotions or feelings.  Empathy includes the belief that the "other" is as strong as the "self" and involves a more advanced understanding of the other person.

Examples of the words in sentences:

Compassion without empathy does not follow the Golden Rule of  "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you."

Counselors often use empathy in helping clients, but it is their compassion that lead them to a life as counselors.

Julie C is one of the most compasionate and empathetic people I know.  She is one of the most open and giving people I have had the honor of knowing in a very long time.  Kudos to her for the many people she inspires and helps each and every day, even in spite of the fact that she has many things going on in her own personal life.  Julie, you are truly a testament of what a true Christian is.  You go above and beyond and don't expect anything in return.
