As many of you know I am retired military and as such I receive a retiree magazine three times a year.  I was aware of this but had not seen the exact wording on the new law concerning saluting the flag.  When I state soldiers, I include sailors and airmen as well.

Retired and Veteran Soldiers are still proud and still serving!  Congress has put the "Still Saluting" into law for Retired Soldiers and other veterans.  The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (Public Law 110-181) changed Section 9, Title 4, U.S. Code, which covers "Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of the U.S. Flag."   Following is that section of the U.S. Code, as reworded by the law change.  PLEASE share this information with veterans and other retired military persons you know.

"During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present in uniform should render the military salute.  Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.  All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention.  All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes."

This law was passed because we are at war and it is a way for all veterans to show unity with our fellow brothers/sisters fighting for our country by rendering the salute at the appropriate time.

Thanks,
Glenn

Thanks for sharing this with us. I know there is a lot of people out here who do not the proper way to salute the flag. Being married to a past military person I have known this for years. So many people today disrespect our flag. Thanks again.
