Coffee Snobs Unite
Elle, here in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Cafe use to be owned by a woman, whose father grew coffee in South America. She is really a coffee snob and can tell you lots about coffee and the selection process. I don't know if she is still the owner or not, but she is use to sell some of the top coffee beans. I haven't been down there in years, but she is the first person that I have found who seemed to really know more about coffee than most of us want to know.
The other place that had good coffee was a gourmet kitchen supply that was located behind what is now Fred's...in a little shopping center back there. Before that they were in the Delchamp's shopping mall there on McFarland across from Winn-Dixie...Delchamp's on the Hill....do you remember...it is the excercise place now and home for Jimmy John's out where Northport and Tuscaloosa divide on McFarland.
Really good coffee is expensive and can cost you an arm and a leg. Tea is the same way. There are some teas that are over $100 for an oz. No, I have not sampled some that expensive, yet. But the Chinese have and import some really expensive teas.
I'll 'fess up! I'm a coffee snob too. Sure, I'll drink whatevers available when away from home, but at home I want a good dark roasted espresso bean. And we prefer to grind our beans as we use them. Nothing like freshly ground beans. My husband has a catalog were he is ordering some imported beans from S. America (various countries) so we are going to be trying some new 'flava" soon. We used to get some good Brazilian beans from a family friend that traveled there frequently, but that source dried up. (moved away)
So, yeah! I like the good stuff.

I like coffee even more after surgery, as the warmth seems to calm my stomach. I checked on the Kona I had that someone gave me the other day and it was from MI....not even close to Hawaii and it was artificially flavored, etc., etc, etc. So you really have to be careful when you buy coffee that you are getting what you think you are getting.
You were certainly lucky to have friends who could send or bring you coffee from the sources. And I agree that the freshly ground is the best. You also have to be careful how you store it, or it loses some of its flavor. I put mine in vacuum sealed containers, but even that doesn't work for long period of storage. You just have to drink fast when you open a new one...heeheeheehee...
