Your local mental health mental retardation agency has a sliding scale based on your income.  You will need to take a pay check stub to show what you actually make and/or the kind of paper work that you might have to fill out, if you are doing any disability, etc.   The fee can be as  low a $1.  There really is never a reason to go without services.

Alabama contracts with local community agencies for these services.  Here in Tuscaloosa the community agency that does this is Indian Rivers.  I don't know where you are or what the local agency is there.

UAB has a program, also.  It is not expensive either.

Some counselors in private practice will take pro bono clients; although that is doubtful if they are just starting out and trying to feed their families.

If you are associated with a university, as a student, then the university will have counseling services available that are usually free or greatly reduced.

Private counseling without insurance can range from $50 an hour to $200, depending on the counselor and the service.  I think that local public agencies range from $1 to about $35...but I have not seen the figures in years..so it could be much higher now.

Your local United Way should be able to direct you towards some help.  I know our local United Way has alcohol and drug addiction assistance that is free or on a sliding scale (as a single parent, you should qualify for help with them).

You DON'T have to do this alone.  There IS help out there, you just have to find it.  As someone else mentioned, you have already made the first step by admitting you have a problem.
