Steroid Pack

Has anyone taken the Steroid pack after having gastric bypass? If so what was your experience with it. And is it safe to take after WLS? My doctor prescribed it to me for pain in my hip joint but I am afraid it will make me gain weight or have swelling. Thanks for any information.

I took the "z-pack" for poison oak back in May.  (5 day run of steroids).  I really didn't notice any changes with it.    It didn't do the trick, and I ended up on a 14-day steroid plan...started out taking 140mg and down from there.  I did notice changes that time, LOL.  I was irritable, couldn't sleep at night, and did notice I got hungry in between meals.  However, when the bottle was empty, the poison oak was gone.  Doc said I had the worst case she'd ever seen...got into my bloodstream, etc.

My mom experiences horrible pain with her hip - even after having a replacement a few years back.  I know it's hard to live with...but maybe the steroids will help.

Good luck!

Hi Judy, Had a minute at work, so I thought I'd reply. I've had a horrible time with steroids. I always gain at least 10 pounds when I take them by mouth and it takes weeks to lose it again. The last time I had a steroid it was by injection and I ended up in the ER. I gained 9 pounds in 12 hours and was so swollen I couldn't fit into any of my clothes and was terribly sore. Anyway, they've determined that I'm (allergic) to steroids and can't take them anymore. I think probably everyone has the possibility to gain weight while taking steroids. Just don't freak out, because in a few weeks you're back to normal again. It's just frustrating after having lost all this weight to gain again. Hope this helped...

Wow you really had a bad experance. I don't think I am allergic I just don't want to gain or have swelling. He gave me one of those packs that you take for a week but I haven't had it filled yet because I don't think I will take it. I see the Doctor again today so maybe he can do something else instead. Thanks

I have taken Zpacks a few times since WLS with no problems.

I don't think your doc would have prescribed them to you if he felt they would be a problem.

Debbie, I just got over taking a steriod pack, twice.  I had back to back outbreaks of poison ivy.  I didn't notice any problems with it.  The benefits outweigh the risks and any appetite will only be temporary.  I do get really hyper with them and usually don't sleep the second night but I did that before WLS.

Thanks Glenn, I feel better about taking it now.

Steroid packs and limited steroid injections are safe to take post WLS.   When my rheumatoid arthritis and/or my orthopedic problem (HEY LISA  ) gets unbearable I do have to take them as a last resort.  When that happens I can expect no less than a 10 to 15 pound weight gain within 12 to 24 hours.  It is NOT from appetite but a side effect from the medication.  I do get blessed relief.  Once the medication adjusts in my system the excess weight quickly comes back off.

Judy a Z pack and a steroid dose pack that you got are 2 different medicine. A Z pak is a antbiotic  for infection. Medrol dose pack is an entirely different drug. I just did not want you to get confused . Hope that this helps you.
