I am mad as an old wet hen today. Today my Bird comes home from school to inform me the principals have decide the kids are not ALLOWED to wear the colors red or blue. Apparently you are in a gang f you wear either of those colors. Now, I am mad. Bird wears only solid color tee shirts. No writing, no stripes, no nothing. He has tee's in several shades of blue and red. NOTHING has come home from the school about this. Not a word. My phone has been ringing off the hook with other parents saying the same thing. This is just ridiculous. It is only an issue because the adults have made it an issue. There is nothing in the dress code that bans a color of shirt. If they wear green it doesn't make them a frog, if they wear black it doesn't make them goth ( yea, I got one of those too), if they wear white it doesn't make them angels. AARRGGHH!! I have already called my school board rep and left a message. I just had to vent!!

Renee...I don't get school any more. I wish they would care as much about their education and the children and not worry so much about the color of the shirt. I do appreciate educators, but my goodness...when I was in school, kids wore what they had and sometimes it wasn't pretty. Of course that was in the Stone Age LOL. We did the best we could and many kids do that now. I respect those educators that want the kids to learn and genuinely care about them. I hate this for you and Bird.
Well...we have a similar rule at our "school"!
MY STUDENTS must wear more than just their underwear!! Yep, as ridiculous as it sounds, Sophie still likes to buck this rule. What can I say, I have rebellious homeschooled kids!
I'm sorry, I just had to write that. I'm the last person to share my experience with public schooling as I do not have much experience in that area from a parents perspective. All I can say is I understand how frustrating that can be. Let us know what the SB rep. has to say about it.

Iris, I understand your frustration. They cold have said something long before now. But ya know what, there's a thing called a uniform. I'm all in favor of them for every school, private, public, grade, and high school. It shows the kids belong to that particular school and outsiders are easily recognized. Other problems solved by uniforms are that all the kids are dressed alike and there's no competition as to who has the most expensive, stylish clothes. Heck, kids even know what they're going to wear the minute they get out of bed, no running late trying to decide what to wear. I'll probably get flamed for this as being against individuality, but I don't care. To me, it's mostly about safety in today's crazy world. I'm 56 years old, and wore a uniform for 12 years from grades 1 - 12 in Catholic school. It certainly didn't hurt me. I really hope I'm not sounding catty, I don't mean to. I feel strongly about school uniforms, but understand that it's something each area school board needs to decide upon and impliment over time. When my kids were in school, we were told during one school year that uniforms would be mandatory the following year. So, we knew when we went shopping for school clothes that there wasn't an option. In the long run, it's much cheaper too.

Debbie,
I don't think you are being catty at all. I get uniforms. I d wouldn't have a problem if they did go to uniforms. But..our school system has not implemented a uniform policy. And as Carmen said...they have to wear what they have in the closet. It just infuriates me that they are trying to ban particular colors. If there is gang activity in the school...get rid of the known gang members!! Don't punish everyone else!! I have fought the school system here before. I have always had great success because I know the city's handbook policies in and out. I have used their own policy to make my point.
Now I am all for rules. But again, my child's rights DO NOT stop the minute they enter the school doors. THe system does not put a roof over his head or the clothes on his back. Ya'll look for me to go to jail!! LOL!!

Actually its not the school or the officals that make it an issue it is the lack of parents and control from those who ARE in the Gangs or in most cases want to be. Gang activity is something that many people are unaware of it sneaks into schools and then becomes an issue that has to be dealth with ultimately it comes down to how they handle it. in most cases certain colors or styles of dress are "banned". It is unfortunate for the kids who behave but a neccesary evil in a world where parents turn their kids over to the schools and let them behave badly. This is even a problem in elementary aged kids. My suggestion wait until you recieve official word from the school or the board and then go to the board meeting. It has been my expereince that quite quickly students pass along these informational and sometimes blow them quite out of proportion as they get passed along ( example: last year a student sent a text to another student that there was a "silent" bomb threat at school. Within twenty minutes over three dozen parents showed up in a panic to pick up their children...the Truth: there was going to be a suprise mock lock down.)
