Punctured intestine, no gastric bypass

Hi all, I haven't looked in for a while.  I had surgery on 7/3/08 and woke up in ICU with an abdominal incision and no bypass!  To say the least I was disappointed and in a lot of pain.  As the lap. was started, one of the instruments pierced my small intestine and they looked for the tear for 1 1/2 hr. before they cut me open.  After repairing the puncture, my doctor felt that it had been so long that he didn't feel comfortable continuing with the surgery at that time.  He told me that I can have the surgery at a later date.  They will try to do it lap. again.  Abdominal surgery is rough!  My sister had the gastric bypass in May by the same surgeon and has done great.  I don't feel hard at the doc - there is always a risk of complications or human error.  I have to admit that I will definitely be more apprehensive next time.  I will wait until 2009 because my husband and I have a long awaited trip west planned for Oct.
Has anyone experienced an intestinal puncture during laproscopic surgery?

I am so very sorry this happened to you.  You seem to have a pretty good attitude about it and that will help in the long run.  I did not have a punctured intestine, but suffered a perforation when the gastro doc was stretching a stricture for the third time about 3 months out from my RNY.  I was on TPN for almost 3 weeks and could have nothing by mouth while they were making sure the perforation healed.  I was very lucky they saw the perforation during the endoscopy as I could have ended up with a nasty infection.  Since all of that, I have been great.  If you want to try for the surgery again, I pray you get it and it all goes without a hitch the next time!

As hard as it may seem, things happen for a reason. Sounds like your surgeon was wise to delay the WLS and let the puncture heal. I hope you can have your WLS and enjoy great success with it. Hang in there!!

So sorry to hear about your experience.  I know how disappointed you must be that you didn't get your bypass.  But at least your doctor said he can do it at another time.  Give your body time to heal and we will be praying for a quick recovery for you.

Thanks Michele, Kay, Pam, and Sandi-

I appreciate your well wishes.  I am hanging in there.  I feel pretty good right now.  My appetite has come back with a vengance, unfortunately.  I did about 3 weeks pre-op diet and lost 17 lbs.  and then about another 9 with the surgery.  For a couple of weeks I could hardly eat anything, but of course, that didn't last.

I enjoy seeing all the before and afters.  Friends ask me, "Are you going to try to have the bypass again!?"  And I tell them - I still have the same problem.  Get fit or die trying! LOL

Thanks again.  Best of luck to you all,
