Question About The few Days After RNY Bypass
Yes it is normal.. The gas for me lasted 2 or 3 weeks, but the first week is worst. OK.. before surgery I was a chocolate person so I bought chocolate protein shakes.. Well after surgery I couldn't figure out why they tasted so bad... I found out that the chocolate are the worst. I didn't like strawberry before surgery but I used the strawberry advantage shakes (already mixed) and they tasted good. I also put them in the freezer and had what I called an Icy...
I know the journey has just begun for you but it is a WONDERFUL journey!!!

Walk, walk, walk. It's the only thing that will get rid of it. As far as flatulance type of gas...well for me that never went away. I am so gassy now it drives me nuts (and I use a lot of air spray...lol). Seriously, it gets better.
I like the EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control Protein drinks. Especially the Strawberry Cream and French Vanilla. I put them in the freezer just long enough to get them slushy and drink them with a straw. YUM! I drink 2 a day just to make extra sure I get all my protein in. They have the best prices at Wal-Mart and Target, but a better selection at Wal-Mart.

as the others have stated, the gas is normal and will last for some time. and the best thing you can do for it is to get out there and walk as much as you can tolerate. (heck, even taking a nice hot shower will do wonders for how you feel! )
as far as good tasting protein drinks, that's sort of a personal thing but i can tell you the one that *I* really enjoy. it's the 50 gram slams from gnc. it's a 15 ounce rtd (ready to drink) can and comes in several different flavors. the ones i mostly prefer are the strawberry, vanilla or chocolate although the cookies and creme is good too. the banana cream is HORRIBLE though and there's one other flavor (a caramel something i think?) that i haven't tried yet.
anywho, they're roughly $4 a can though but they have 50 grams of protein in each can so you're getting a good bit of protein for your money there. and if you have a gold card then you'll save 20% when you buy the first 7 days of each month and you also save money when you buy them by the case (just a few tricks i've picked up along the way.) you can usually buy them from their cooler one at a time if you'd like to try one before making a huge purchase to make sure it's going to be something you're gonna like.

Congrats on your surgery!! I buy the Whey protein at WalMart...vanilla flavor. Then...I add Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast, any flavor yogurt, or fresh/frozen fruit to make a homemade smoothie type drink. I also use Soy milk, as I cannot tolerate skim milk anymore. I do not like the ready made drinks, but I think protein drinks in general are mostly personal preference. It's a lot of trial and error!!
Good luck with your journey!!

Like everyone else has already said, walking will help get the gas out better than anything. Even just walking, walking, walking inside the house (since it's so darned hot outside) will help tremendously.
After my surgery I couldn't stand any of the milk-based protein drinks even though I loved them before. The only one I liked was the Nectar Fuzzy Navel made in a blender like a slushee (add ice). The suggestion to try muscle milk is one that you as a RNY-er should approach with caution this early because I think it's high in fat. Sometimes fat can make you feel bad (like dumping). I'm kind of sensitive to that. But there may be a lite version (I don't know if the "lite" pertains to sugar content or fat content). There will be much more you can tolerate or that tastes good to you further out from your surgery. Your tastes probabaly will return somewhat to normal later on.

I've always been a chocolate lover but chocolate protein drinks are just nasty. I like the EAS strawberry and the low carb slim fast is not bad. But only strawberry. And if you can afford it the Chike is wonderful. Any flavor! https://www.chikenutrition.com/store/contact.html
I just can't afford it plus I'm eating food now. Not hard to get your protein in when you can eat food. But I occasionally will drink a protein drink.
