Asking about "JANUVIA" again...

I asked a couple of months back and did not find anyone familiar with Januvia, but thought I would try again.

Do any of you take "JANUVIA" and if so, what are your thoughts about it?

I have been on it for close to six months now--will be going back for a check of all my labs in another 3 weeks or so--and am not sure if I want to continue taking this or not.

Anyone have any comments about this medication?

I have never heard of this Carolyn. Is it helping your blood sugar levels??

DebbieDoo....

I am really not sure what it is doing. I am not a diabetic but rather hyperinsulinism---the total opposite of diabetes. I have been on Glucophage for about eight years or so and my doctor just decided about five months ago to add the Januvia and see if it would help.
My insulin levels had been continuing to increase and my
glucose levels remaining in the 80's -90's with my HgbA1c at about 5.6 to 5.9. Based on my fasting blood sugars, I don't have a problem, but based on the HgbA1c, obviously my glucose levels are going up at some point. They have not recommended home monitoring of the blood sugars for me, but I sometimes think it would be beneficial to me --just so I would know what affects me and how.

Now all that to say---In the five months I have been on the Januvia, I have lost a little over 20 pounds. YEAH!
I find that sugars----cakes, pies, cookies, candy----that kind of sugars---make me very nauseated. I have to wonder if the Januvia may be dropping my blood sugar too low and causing the nausea. That weight loss is right on target of my PCP's recommendation of one pound a week----so, I think he will be pleased with that result.

I go back in early August to have all my labs repeated and see what the first six months of Januvia will have done to my overall picture of the blood sugars/insulin levels. I hope to have good results, but if there has not been a signifigant improvement, I may talk to my doctor about going back to the Glucophage alone as I really feel the Januvia is what is causing my nausea and I don't like it. Maybe less Glucophage if he wants me to keep on the Januvia? I don't know. Right now I take 1000mg of Glucophage XR in the mornings and 500mg of Glucophagh XR with 100mg of Januvia in the evenings.

I guess I will know more when I get the labs repeated. I have not been successful in finding many people who have taken this medication. I know it is fairly new, but I wish there were more information out there for me about it.

(I do work in a 30 physician medical practice and those doctors in our practice that I have talked to about it seem to think it is a good medication--that is encouraging.)
