Attended the seminar last night at the Dowdle Center. Man, they couldn't have picked a worse place to have this! Still, it was very informative and I found Dr. Mailapur to be very professional. Think I'm going to go with him for my surgery.. Actually, after listening to him last night I think I've changed my mind about going with the Lap Band... I'm seriously considering Roux-en-Y instead...

Good luck with whatever procedure you decide to have.

Glad you've found a surgeon - take your time and decide which procedure is best for you.  I chose RNY because of the amount of weight I needed to lose - with the slow loss of the lapband, I would have not felt successful.  My husband went with RNY because he is a diabetic, and our surgeon felt he would have the best results & get off the insulin faster. This is a great source of information, so keep posting & asking questions! lisa

I've heard the reports that the surgery "cures" diabetes. Has this happened for your husband?? Is he off the insulin? Yeah, I have a substantial amount to lose as well.. I'm 400+ at the moment so yeah, I'm thinking I will go for the RNY..

I was nearly 400lbs...387.5 to be exact.  I lost 165lbs in the first year, I've seen people lose more in a shorter time.   I just feel with the band that it would have been much slower, and while I would have eventually gotten to where I am, well...I'm just an impatient person - when I was ready to lose, I was ready to 'git r done', LOL.  As for the diabetes cure, there is a lady in our support group that was taking 2 oral medications & 4 shots of insulin every day.  She hasn't taken either since surgery (and also has a beautiful baby daughter!).  Anyway, my husband was on an oral meds 2x a day, and insulin 2x a day.  He's down to 1 pill per day.  (He's 3mos out today).  His BS readings have consistently been normal, or nearly normal.  It's been a life-changing operation for him already!

I'm not sure what the problem was with the Dowdle Center. I've been to many meetings there and it was fine.  BUT what is important is that you've started on a wonderful journey and you HAVE found a really good surgeon.  Dr. Mailapur is a little bit tough, but he knows his stuff.  He did my surgery and will do my daughter's in hopefully just a few more weeks.  Best wishes and prayers for you in whatever you decide to do!

Was just difficult to get in and out of due to the time it was to start  (5:15pm) which made traffic a pain in the neck and all the construction currently going on in that area.
