So I am terribly excited that I have my appt with Dr. Sherer at Cahaba for RNY, but I am wondering what to expect. I know the way the center does it is that you watch a video (i believe in place of a seminar) and then talk one on one with the Dr. Do I get a surgical date then if things are in order? I know he may want a psyc eval although the front office says they don't when ins like Tricare don't require. He might also want a sleep study just to know if/how severe apnea could be (also not req by my ins but maybe helpful.) Ultimately, the office says Tricare is easy to work with and the process pretty straightforward so I was just wondering if I might get a date for surgery when I go. I have my meeting with the NUT along with a nut class scheduled right after so that wouldn't be an issue... I also was wondering if I should bring my most recent labs (chol, insulin...) Any ideas on how it usually goes would be appreciated. I know other surgeons like to evaluate, approve, and schedule on the same trip (like my tonsils) but I'm not sure since this is a far more serious procedure...Thanks... Kim

Good morning Kim!  First, let me say WELCOME TO THE BAMA BOARD!!  We are so glad to have you join us!  You are going to love Dr. Sherer.  He is my surgeon.  I had my surgery August 11 of 2004.  You are right about the video but it isn't boring at all.  Dr. Sherer will then come in and talk to you for a while.  Then, he will answer any question you may have.  They will send you down to get more labs for the office.  It depends on if your labs were this week sometime?  You could call Evelyn in his office and ask.  CONGRATS on your Evaluation!  We will be sure to save you a seat on the loser's bench!!

Hi Kim,  I dont know about your surgeon questions but I can tell you about Tricare. I went for my orientation, then to the surgeon for my evaluation. She said I was a candidate for surgery and submitted the paperwork to tricare. I had approval in less than a week.  It took about 6 weeks before I had my surgery because my surgeon was that booked up. Kim
