Well I was just told that I am eligable for BC/BS insurance with my company.  I am so excited.   Would anyone who has had any WLS over the past year and a half,  that used BC BS share their experiences with me.  I am so excited but don't want to get to hyped just yet! Thanks in advance!  Susan

Susan,

I have BCBS and have found it to be excellent in most ways. BUT, before you get too excited, be sure and check the individual policy. I work in a large medical facility and our BCBS has an exclusion regarding WLS in it. So, not all BCBS covers it. I hope that yours will if you are looking to have the surgery.

Good Luck.

I am so upset now!  I went and read all the paper work I was given today and I guess I am out of luck!  I have worked my butt off to try to get a good job with insurance so I can get this surgery done and see what happens.  I guess the next best thing is to stop eating, fasting!  Water, water and water and nothing else.  By God I am going to loose this darn weight one way or another!!!!!!!

I have BC BS of Alabama.  THey have always taken care of me.  At one time it paid 100% WLS.  Then so many people started having it done and it changed.  It pays 50 % of the Surgeon Fee.  I had Lap RNY.  I only had to pay Dr. Sherer $1106.00 and then i paid the hospital $100 Deductiable and $15.00 a day i was in the hospital.  $1106.00 plus $130.00 equals $1236.00.  That is better than what was filed.  My statement came and it said the grand total was $25,600.  I also had a tubal done at the same time.

Does your insurance policy have an exclusion?  All policies are definitely not created equal and some exlude WLS altogether.  I have BCBSAL (government) and I had to do the six month physician supervised diet (only lost 10 lbs) then jump through a bunch of hoops.  My claim was denied the first time around, but approved on appeal.  Have you talked to your benefits administrator to find out if WLS is covered on your policy?  Don't give up so easily.  Fight for what you want.
