Hi Carolyn.  Glad you are better.  By Monday maybe all the infection will be gone.  Was the infection caused by a tooth?  I had an absessed tooth three years ago.  I went to our little small town dentist here and he said the root was wrapped around the jaw bone so he could not pull it.  He referred me to an oral surgeon.  I took the antibiotics and I still have the tooth.  I did not have dental ins. at the time but it was time for us to add ins. at work so I ran to the ins. clerk and added dental.  I have paid for dental ins. three years and have never used it!!!  If I had saved all the monthly payments I could have paid for the oral surgeon and had money left over!!!  Oh well.  Let us know how you are.

Debbie,

I am thankful for my dental insurance. It pays 100% with no copay or deductible for cleanings twice a year and for x-rays once a year. It will cover 100% of emergency treatment with a $25.00 copay up to some
limit (I think $1000). It covers 100% of fillings and then
something like 50% of crowns/bridges....up to the yearly limit. (My dental insurance cost me less than $6.00 a month! so well worth that to me)

When I went to the surgeon on Tuesday, his charge was
right at $500 and I would have only had to pay $25 but because he wanted to use the nitrous gas, I had to pay an extra $85 out of pocket. Insurance did not cover that.
So--I paid $110 out of pocket and at that point, I would have signed my life over to him for some relief from the pain. He did say if this progressed and I had to be hospitalized, it would then fall to my BCBS Medical insurance--but fortunately we have not had to go there.

I also have prescription coverage and all SEVEN prescriptions that I have had this week have had the
$10.00 copay on them, so that was fortunate for me as well. I can not imagine the cost of all this had I had to pay full price!

As for the cause---they can not identify with certainty any one tooth that caused the abcess. On X-ray there is no clear cut abcess on any tooth but the oral surgeon is suspicious that I may have one tooth that is the culprit.
That tooth already has a root canal and a crown so if it continues to be a problem, it will be a goner! But for right now, the surgon wants to try and save the tooth.
The actual abcess or pocket of infection ended up above the gum line more into the cheek area.
It is possible that there was something that irritated the gum and caused the tooth a problem, thus leading to the abcess or the opposite--that the abcess developed and the inflammation from the abcess irritated the teeth.
Not positive which way it happened. He was able to do an Incision and Drainage from the inside of my mouth. I am hoping, that like you, when the antibiotics have done their job, the tooth will be fine and I can put this behind me and not have to revisit it!

Thanks your your thoughts and concern.

Take care---and watch that tooth!

Lisa...you are so funny! Your post did make me laugh.
You know, I work in a very large medical practice and have two doctors that I work very closely with....one of those doctors saw me on Tuesday and then went to my supervisor and told her she needed to quit being so rough on the staff. She was confused by his comments and asked him what he meant and he told her that I looked like she had beat the **** out of me. Yes...I took my licking and kept on ticking....the PAIN meds helped! But trust me, I have done my share of whining too.

Thanks for the good thoughts.....

(PS--Hope your hubby is doing better too! )

Carolyn, As my Hannah would say..... you are a silly girl! I bet your supervisor was ready to beat the **** out of him after all that!  LOL! I am glad the pain meds helped, but remember whining is what gets us our way!  Ha Ha! And if whining doesn't get us what we want, I have found that laying in the floor kicking and screaming works wonders too! Can we say I'm a BRAT!  Yes, I am and I know I am! Fishy is feeling some better, as you said pain meds do wonders! But until we get this surgery he is having to be a lefty whether he wants to or not! Alright, silly girl, get your rest and try to be sweet! (even though we all know being sweet isn't fun!LOL!) Lisa and Fish
