Have you ever....
Have you ever had a really bad toothache that turned out to be an abcessed tooth/gum/jaw---that turned into something serious?
I know it can happen--it has happened to me, so I am told. But I have never seen this before and am curious if it is more common than I think or not.
Pain started on Friday while I was out of town, on Sunday--I went to two walk in clinics in Mississippi that would not even give me antibiotics because it was dental---fortunately my doctor from home was willing to call in antibiotics to Mississippi. By the time I got home Sunday night, the pain was relentless---off work on Monday for the holiday and just stayed in bed with ice packs all day---face swelling---went to work on Tuesday and as soon as my doctor's office opened, I went to see him. Remember he had already called in Amoxocillin 500mg three daily while I was out of town--In addition, he gave me a shot of 1gm Rocephin in the office, and wrote prescriptions for Bactrim DS and Clindamycin along with Lortab 10mg for pain. Follow me---we are at FOUR antibiotics now! He was not convinced that it was all tooth. My face was so swollen that my left eyes was half closed. So....he schedules a CT for the afternoon and sends me straight to see my dentist....who does X-Rays and while not finding an ABSOLUTE abcessed tooth, he did find some diffuse infection in the gum/cheek area that he feels is related to teeth. So...dentist sends me straight to an Oral Surgeon who in the office did an Incision and Drainage of the site.
(CT cancelled when they were able to determine a cause for the infection/swelling)
That was fun! Left it open to drain and still having drainage two days later. SO today, back to the Oral Surgeon who grimaced and said that it had not improved to his satisfaction and added AUGMENTIN 875mg to the other Antibiotics. We are now up to FIVE antibiotics going on in my body. This just baffles me. The swelling is improving, but I now have cellulitis in my cheek and all around my eye, both upper and lower lids. I left the oral surgeons office this afternoon with instructions to return tomorrow morning at 7:45 for him to check it again and he said if I have any swelling at that point, I need to plan on going into the hospital for IV antibiotics.
Is it just me, or does this not all seem extreme to be coming from a DENTAL issue?
Oh well....I guess I should go and chug down this pharmacy of pills over here-----and hope and pray that things look better by morning or else I will be reading OH from my laptop at the hospital tomorrow.

Yep...still swallowing the pills and trying not to miss a single dose of them. ALthough, I have limited my food to mostly very soft things...bananas and mashed potatoes have been my very close friends.
You know...I work for a group of almost 30 physicians, but family practice and dentistry is not their specialty--so while most of their cell phone and programmed into my cell phone--I was to stubborn to call them. I know they
would have helped, but I hate to bother them like that.
It was Baptist Minor Care and Methodist Minor Care that refused to even look at me---said I would have to be seen in an ER and I did not want to spend forever in an ER when I knew I would be home Sunday night.
What goes around, comes around...some day, they will need help and well...just wait and see what happens.

u going to hoppers this weekend if so let me know i will try and go
Kevin,
I am not sure about this weekend....from the sounds of it right now, I may be spending the weekend hooked up to IV's at one of the local hospitals. Not sure which hospital that particular Oral Surgeon uses.
It will probably be next weekend before I am out again.
Honestly, my face is so swollen and the cellulitis has it so red and streaked that I really look like something from a monster movie!
But...if I have a miracilous recovery and venture out I will post and let you know before I go.
