I have done really well over the last six months.  The only problem i seem to have is with my urinary tract. I have been making kidney stones, and i have had three utis that turned into a kidney infection.   i take all of my vitamins everyday, but my urologist said it is because i am not able to drink as much as i used to and i am getting dehydrated.  i drink non stop!! all day every day.  the dr said that this happens to some people.  has anyone else gone through this?  it is a little frustrating.  the bad part is that i had a kidney stone three years ago, and i found out that if your body makes them before surgery, it will almost always start producing more after gastric bypass.  that sucks.  no one ever told me that.  not that i would not have had the surgery. i would not change anything, i am so much happier, it just sucks!!

glitter-you-rock.gif picture by debloo Hello Mandi! Congratulations!!!  I don't have kidney stones but much pain when I do dehydrate, which I also do very easy now also. Have to drink constantly. I'm wondering how I'll do when I go to work. I don't think my boss will be happy about a water bottle hooked to my side while I work. lol But I'm thinking it's either that or be in pain. UGH!  Like you I wouldn't change the surgery either! I love being 30lbs+ lighter so far!

I have a lot of problems with kidney stones and infections but I can't say its because of the surgery. I have beenin the hospital several times before surgery due to stones. My doctor told me and I also looked this up online, that once you have had a kidney stone, expect it to happen again. My boss has never had WLS but he suffers from stones more than I do. I think your diet, heredity and other factors contribute to this. I do try to stay away from caffeine as that seems to make things worse on my kidneys. I take a lot of Tylenol because of my arthritis but I've been told that most pain relievers are hard on your kidneys. I'm now drinking more water, lemonade and caffeine free tea and coffee. I had a major caffeine withdrawal headache for several days but I know that this was something I had to do.

I imagine that the surgery may be a culprit but I think we would have these blasted stones even without the surgery. I have an appointment tomorrow for a scan to see if I have another stone i my left side. I had three back in August that required stints being put in. I'm tired of it and ready for someone to find a solution.

I am sick of them to! plus i am not normal. it takes me about three weeks to pass them.  which makes me miserable!! i get sick of being in so much pain.  my regular doctor told me that the next time i have one he will find a urologist that will take it out for me.  after my last episode i just can not go through that again.  plus i dont think it is fair for them to leave the stone in that long, that is most likely caused the uti, which turned into the kidney infection!!

I use Dr. Bhuta in Montgomery. I believe he is the best and believe me, I've been through several. This is his speciality and he's such a a nice man. He is very caring and funny as well. I was getting ready for my wedding last year when those 3 stones popped up. He said he would get me well in time for my honeymoon and he did!!

I went to my regular doctor this week because I'm not exactly sure what the problem is this time. Now I wish I had gone straight to Dr. Bhuta. He is a lot more sensitive to the pain and discomfort.

I don't believe Dr. Bhuta would let a stone stay in once he can see it and know its there. He immediately put me in the hospital and got me well enough to put the stints in. I had pain medication that really helped too.

One more thing about Dr. Bhuta. I had an outstanding balance left on my account in December and called his office up one day to see about making payment arrangements and he told me to forget about the balance. He said I had already paid enough. Have you ever had a doctor do that???? This was my first!!

Let me know if I can help.

You have done an AWESOME job - sorry you've had to deal with kidney stones.  I've never had one (knock on wood, lol) but have a girlfriend who's had a horrible time with them. (She's not a WLS patient either).  Her doctor told her to stay away from dairy - sour cream is a staple in her house!  She's a huge coffee drinker, too, and he told her caffeine is a trigger, too.   CONGRATS on your success this far. You just reminded me of the dairy products. I am a big cheese lover and I remember Dr. Bhuta telling me to lay off the cheese!!! That includes ice cream, milk, etc...

Lisa,

My doctor says its because of the calcium intake and it's not the case for everyone - probably just those already susceptible to them. People getting calcium from their diet are LESS likely to get stones; whereas those who take calcium supplements are MORE likely to get stones. I even went online to investigate this and its there in black and white. So, already having a tendency towards forming stones, I'm in a no win situation when it comes to kidney stones. I have to take my supplements. Anyway, here's hoping you never have one!!!
