Question bout a Barium Enema

I have to have a barium enema in the morning. I cannot take Mag Citrate, so I have to take the Osmoprep pills. They gave me the instruction paper for the Colonoscopy. Do I do the clear liquid diet? Not a problem so far today, but  we have a steak dinner planned. I happened to look @ my instruction sheet for the pills & noticed it said clear liquid. I was not told any instructions & since it is a Holiday, I cannot call my GI doc to find out!

Also, once I have the Barium Enema, will I have diarrea or feel bad afterwards? One last question....does it hurt? I have no idea what to expect!!

Hey Bon, ONLY do clear liquids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yes, stay near a restroom at all times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After the B.E. is finished, you will probably have several more bowel movements.  Remember to drink lots of fluids afterwards to ensure that you purge the barium from your system. The B.E. doesn't hurt so much but you will fill really, really full until they let the enema bag down. It's not as bad as it sounds.  I promise! Being an x-ray tech who's done them and who has had them - I can say they aren't the worst test in the world. But remember to make it easier on you - only clear liquids!  And then drink lots of liquids when the test is over. Hope this helps girlie, Lisa and Fish

Thanks Lisa, I figured as much, but also figured it didn't hurt to try!! lol! I have to go to Denver for my other test, when I find out the name, I may hit you up for info, in case you have heard of it. What is on my referral is NOT what he told me. Gonna go by the GI clinic tomorrow to see if they can tell me what it is. I've had so many tests lately, I figure the B.E. can't be too bad. Just not real crazy bout em messin round "that area", ya know??!! lol!!

I had one of these done a couple months ago.  I had a difficult time holding down the pills so i didnt get much of a result from the prep.  The test itself was uncomfortable but not painful, i did have a lot of stomach cramping afterwards.  You do need to drink lots of fluids after the test to flush the barium from your system. Mainly it was just embarrasing but i did have quite the tummy ache afterwards and went home and slept for awhile and felt better later that evening. Good luck, Heather
