Topic: Chronic Illness wls Support Group
What is Chronic Illness?
"A chronic illness is a condition that lasts a year or longer, limits activity, and may require ongoing care. More than 125 million Americans have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, Fibromyalga, Multiple Sclerosis, and Lupus. Nearly half as many have more than one chronic condition."

Hello and welcome,
This group was specifically created for WLS candidates and post ops who like me face the unique challenges that living with a chronic illness may often present.  As individuals with a chronic illness, we face greater challenges that the typical mainstream weight loss surgery patient may not face.
Sometimes we feel left out of the loop as we read about others who are doing certain activities that we are no longer able to tolerate.

Topic: RE: New to the area
I had RNY by Dr. Todd on 8/30/08 and am down over 70 lbs.  He is an amazing doctor who truly cares about his patients, and others as well.  His webstie, www.alaskabariatriccenter.com, has a tab titled "SGM Info" which lists support group meeting information -- dates, times, locations -- sponsored by his office.  There are meetings in the valley, as well as at Alaska Regional in Anchorage.  One of the main tenents of his practice is peer support, both pre and post surgery.  My mother-in-law had surgery from a "doc in the box" in Arizona shortly before mine, and has had no support and very minimal follow up from her surgeon, which has made her less successful and educated about the entire process.  Since post-surgery patients  need annual  blood work and follow up, I STRONGLY recommend that you contact Dr. Tood's office and talk to them about joining in on the SGMs.  I agree that his office appears disorganized (but I believe it is more along the lines of being extremely busy and responsive to patients' needs), but the benefits I have received from Dr. Todd and his staff -- and from my decision to have surgery -- far, far outweigh any inconvenience that perceived disorganization caused me.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.  lynne
