Topic: RE: Any DS'ers in Alaska?
Hey there Jessy!  I am indeed an Alaskan, but no where close to Anchorage (I live in Southeast).  I do travel quite a bit though, so if I'm ever in the area, do you want me to message you?  I'd love to meet ya!

No, I don't believe they do them.  As far as I know, there are still no vetted and respected DS surgeons in Alaska.  I researched and interviewed DS surgeons all over the country and like many others had to travel thousands of miles for my DS.  It appears that you will or have traveled a long way as well! Have you had surgery yet?

I just received my referral recently, and although it is for a civilian doctor, it says on the bottom that you can check the TriCare website to see which doctors are covered by them and you can make an appointment to see any of those without having to call for another referral. So, make sure you read the "fine print" on your referral and you may not have to get it done on base if you prefer not to. Hopefully that holds true for you as well.

Hope you're feeling better this week! Dr. Searles had me on pureed food for the first 30 days, then soft food for six weeks, after that it was just adding different food items. I would try a bite of something (like chicken, beef, etc) and see if my stomach liked it or not. It's very weird, I think our little pouches go through mood swings...since I've been allowed regular food I didn't have any trouble with beef, but, had some today in some soup and I was sick for about an hour.

The first thirty days I wasn't really hungry at all so I didn't even think about food. My husband had to remind me to eat because I'd literally go most of the day without eating anything. After about two weeks on pureed food I was ready for something to munch on...the nurse in Dr's office gave me a wonderful suggestion...munch on a couple of cheerios (the plain ones), they dissolve into nothing but it helps with that need to chew something.

I am also seeing Dr. Searles.  You are on puree foods for 5 weeks from what I understand.  Be sure to make an appointment with a nutritionalist so they can help you.
