Advice For a Scaredy Cat?

Hi there everyone! My name is Heather, and I’ve just discovered this fabulous site.   So, I’ve just turned 22, and I’m seriously considering getting a Lap-Band done. I’ve been doing a little research on it, and it seems like the best option for me. It also seems like it has the least amount of risks associated with death, so I’m definitely all over that.   I know that Dr. Searles at Regional Hospital performs the surgery… I guess I’m just really scared and clueless about the whole thing, and I don’t know where to go from here. Is this a good doctor for this procedure, and if so, should I just contact him directly for a consultation?

I love Doc Searles!  He did my surgery on Mar 20th and I'm down 65 lbs!  Give him a call for a consult!  He isn't the "warm fuzzy" type, more direct and to the point but very competent.  If you prefer the more warm fuzzy type you might consider trying Doc Todd instead!

That's good to know. Thanks so much for the reply!
I actually gave his office a call yesterday and the receptionists told me to go on ahead and see my regular doctor first and have her refer me to him. I don't understand why there has to be an extra step, but oh well.

Hello Heather, The referral just keeps the insurance stuff straight. It is just good to have your primary physician involved. I also am getting the lap band done - although I have been obese for 23 years now - I remember the year I started the weight gain. And I'm 58! Why I waited so long, I do not know. Anyways - while doing the tests to qualify for the lap band, they discovered that I had a gallstone problem. Had to get that out first and Dr. Searles did that surgery for me. Totally professional and polite. So now I am hoping for a surgery date in January. Dr. Searles will also do the lap band for me. Good luck with your journey. I agree with your philosophy about the band - less risk and less invasive. Appeals to me...
