My husband has accepted an IT job on Ft. Greeley and we will be moving to Delta Junction probably at the end of this summer. We are currently living in Austin TX, so this will be a huge change. I have lots of questions about this move. Is there a local place you can buy supplements and protein or does everyone order online? Are there local grocery stores or do you have to go to Fairbanks and stock up? Does Ft. Greeley have a commissary? We are military right now, but we won't be once my husband takes this job. However, with the military contract he will still have some priviledges. We also have 2 young children and I am wondering what there is to do. Our family has become accustomed to eating dinner at restaurants and going to movie theatres or the mall on a regular basis. We are looking forward to spending more time at home as a family. Also, what's the drive like to Fairbanks and can you easily make the drive year round? I have found information on other locations in Alaska, but I would love to talk to someone who actually lives near Delta Junction.
Thanks,
Angela
we dont live in delta..sorry. my husband is military and we live in north pole. sorry to tell you that there are no malls much less real stores in delt. you would either go to fairbanks or anchorage. there is a small commissary on greeley.
thiings in Delta:
2 banks with atms 3 beauty/barber shops 1 dentist library 3 laundry maps a massage place video rental tanning places for shopping there are the gift shops and atv stores and tires stores and the meat companies a few gas/mimi marts fabric store garden center and hardwear store. there are a few places to stay lots of places to camp and a few local places to eat.
it is really beautiful there. it is really the end of the road so to say. because it is the end of the alcan highway. if you like the out doors it is great. summers make the winter worth it! hopes this helps. if you have any more questions let me know and i will try to help
Delta is about a 2 hr drive from Fairbanks where you will probably do a lot of shopping. FBKS has WalMart, Fred Meyer, SAMS Club, Safeway, Old Navy, Barns & Noble, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc. so you won't feel like you're totally out of touch! I grew up in Fairbanks and have friends in Delta. If you were to fly out (for vacation, etc.) you would need to drive to FBKS or Anchorage (I'm not sure how long it takes to get there, but I'm thinking 7+ hrs) and then fly out of there. I suggest getting an Alaska Airlines credit card through Bank of America so you can accumulate miles to fly for free, just make sure you don't carry a balance! The interest rates for these mileage cards are ridiculous!
I also suggest getting involved with your kids' school and joining a church...there are always things to do with those organizations. I just moved to Nome and from VERY RECENT experience, you just have to suck it up and get out there to network and find some friends and resources.
There are a lot of farmers out there too...my sister's in-laws have a carrot farm and there is a diary near town (yes, a DAIRY!). Just enjoy the experience!
