Hi Cindy. It's true our family Dr.s have no idea about anything bariatric. Alls they do is act as a referral for their patients then after that it's completely out of their hands. I am going to red deer for my surgery. I'm from Calgary but heard that red deer is the shortest wait list. Again there is no information on this you just have to be patient. I was referred in February and had my orientation meeting August 19 both this year. After my orientation the appointments started fast and furious. I have appointments every month now. The first is your intake with your nurse, then the next month is your intake with your dietitian, the next month is your psychologist, the next month is intake with is only 10 min with your surgeon then the nurse again and it repeats all over again up until your surgery date. Each bariatric clinic do things different they gave different programs. No clinic is the same. When I say YOUR nurse etc. you are assigned to YOUR own TEAM of Dr.s and health professionals which is also something I really like because they get to know you and visa versa. Hope this helps somewhat. I remember being where you are and there was nobody who could explain all this to me but I keep track of everything

I, too, had to drink the Ensure. I wanted to use Premier Protein instead (because it was cheaper and available in bulk from Costco) but the clinic insisted on Ensure so that's what I drank. I decided to go with it because so close to surgery I didn't want them to say I wasn't being compliant with their rules. It's pricey but it's do-able and they didn't bother me after the first 2 days. As support, my hubby drank them along with me which helped.
If you're clinic doesn't OK the PP then I suggest you go along with what they ask so you don't risk any delays or raise concerns. Post-surgery, no problem with the PP.
Surgery: April 30, 2014: HW: 288 SW: 250 Achieved Goal 149 lbs: April 8, 2015 CW: 158 lbs (working on losing 65 lb regain as of June 1, 2021. Weight was at 215 lbs). Fighting every darn day!
my documentation says - "If you smoke, quit. You can't have surgery if you smoke."
Thank you so much for that information. My family DR is not familier with the process so I have no information or time line on this whole process. All she can tell me is that I am aproved for Red Deer and that I need to wait and hear from them...lol

I was wondering if the Weight Wise Clinic accepts smokers who are willing to quit? I would also like to know if they have an opinion on vaping?? I have been doing a lot of reading and I have the feeling that if you smoke they don't give you a chance at all.
Hi, I know I should be asking my surgeon this question, and I will be, as I start my pre-op diet of Ensure HP Drinks @ 5 per day for 3 weeks on Sept. 10/15.
Question is has anyone used Premier Protein as their drink instead of Ensure HP?
Ricky
thanks for your reply. I have severely cut down my carbs, I haven't eaten bread in months and I don't eat pasta or rice very often at all, so that part I chose to do because I knew it was the right thing for me.
I was at the dietician today and she gave me some good tips and talked to me about plateauing, which I knew was going to happen, I just hope it happened in another 20 pounds ;-) I have amped up my cardio and changed a few things, so I hope that helps. As long as I don't gain then I'm winning :-)
Call the weight loss clinic in Calgary and see if they got your referral, they will have your name if they received it. Mine was lost (about 1 year)and I had to re-apply after I found out, I went back on the waiting list as of July 2015. Red deer has a shorter wait list, only 8 months.

Stalls are a natural part of this journey. Your body simply needs time to adjust to massive, ongoing weight loss. Be patient and keep to the plan. It will pass. Also, be sure to get in all your protein and water, this is so, so important and keep your carbs in check. For me, I did more of a pseudo-low carb plan in that I stayed under about 80 net carbs per day but included in that was veggies, berries and greek yogurt. I found if I bumped up protein and lowered carbs it helped kickstart my weight loss. When I add in too many carbs it stalls me. It might be different for you but I wanted to mention that.
That said, yes, stalls are expected. You will likely find you are still losing inches even in the scale number does not change. Taking monthly measurements is a great way to track success besides the scale and often in more reflective of your progress. Good luck!
