Topic: Having my lapband removed next week
Anyone else in Calgary had to have the band removed due to failure (constant vomiting for 18 months)?? I am a little scared of the removal but even more scared about gaining weight.

Doc told me that the only revision option in Calgary is the sleeve and I could likely have that done in feb-march. Anyone in Calgary have a revision from band to sleeve.

Feeling quite discouraged today.

Topic: Wait times for surgery and scopes in Edmonton
Just to let everyone know that's wondering......cause I know I was
I saw Dr Karmali today and this is what I was told for wait times

They booked my scope for May 23 ......about 2 months later than what they told me it would probably be a month ago ......the receptionist did stress that it may get bumped up

My husband did over hear the staff talking about the wait times getting significantly shorter soon...... That they are going to start pushing surgeries through faster......(we all hope right)

So to give you an idea of the time line I have had......

Every 4-6 wk appt with nurse, dietician, OT, psychologist
Respiratory tests and sleep Apnea tests early June/12
First Dr Modi (internal medicine) appt June 28/12..... Saw her 4 times before surgery referral given
First and only appt with Dr Stoonhacker July 26/12
First Dr Karmali ( surgeon) appt Nov 29/12
Scope appt May 23/12
Possible surgery Aug/12

Hope that helps

Topic: RE: Gallbladder out at the same time as surgery?
I saw Dr Karmali today and asked him......he said he will not take your gallbladder out or anything else out that does not medically need to come out. If he finds unexpected things during the surgery he will deal with it at that time

Hope that helps

Topic: RE: Gallbladder out at the same time as surgery?
I've requested it from my nurse and family drs. I have gall stones and really dont want to have two surgeries.
Both my drs and nurse have said that its a possibility but ultimately up to the surgeon (who i havent yet met).
Ive read in a few books that a lot of surgeons will take it out during every surgery to avoid future problems with it.

Topic: RE: Gallbladder out at the same time as surgery?

I have heard that some doctor do take out the gallbladder regardless of reason.... some even the appendix......but from what I hear the docs with weight wise won't unless you are already having problems...... but I guess it never hurts to ask

Good luck with your surgery..... its coming soon

Topic: Gallbladder out at the same time as surgery?

Has anyone requested and gotten their gallbladder out at the same time as surgery? I know gallbladder issues can arise afterwards, would it be something worth bringing up to the surgeon? or wait until i'm in pain afterwards?

Topic: RE: Edmonton Dr Karmali 1st consult....?? bringing support person

there is a 3 hour pre op class you will have to attend after getting approval from the doc, that covers the post op care, food choices, what to do at the hospital and when you get home etc...that sounds like it'd be more beneficial for your mom to attend.  My husband came to that with me, he also came to the meeting with Dr, Birch but i think he retained more info from that pre op class

Topic: RE: Plastic Surgery after WLS

Here is some information from a friend who had plastics with Dr. Toy a couple years ago.  So, keep in mind that costs may have changed.  I should be in the market for plastics in the next year so.

- Panny is paid by AB Health  -  Panny meaning your skin removed from your belly ONLY, what's below the belly button/waist line.

- Abdominoplasty is not covered by AB Health - Abdo.. means your belly, stomach and pulling the sides in/towards the front and liposuction to make it all nice. It will have 2 large cuts/scars ... one vertical from sternum to the pubic area, the other from hip to hip.  He will also do a pubic lift if necessary within this procedure.

Toy said if he does Abdos he only charges a "nominal fee" for that as part is the panny which is covered.  He said it's about $ 6'500 (didn't ask if this is just for my specific case or if this is the "standard"). Recovery time is 4 - 6 weeks

Breast reduction is always completely paid by AB Health and he said really easy to do ... he does about 200/year.  Recovery time about 3 weeks

Upper arm lifts are not paid. It costs about $ 8'000 for both arms ... recovery time about 2 - 3 weeks but the scar will be seen for a few months maybe even a year. In my case it won't be "perfect" as I have a lot of lose skin even overhanging my elbow ... he will do Liposuction in combination with the arm lift. He does not touch lower arm at all.

Outer thigh lift .... costs about $ 12'000 ... Recovery time 4 - 6 weeks.  This procedure can easy be combined with the Abdominoplasty as it has also about the same recovery time. There is a 2 night stay required with this procedure as it is more complicated.  He gives a "deal" if combined meaning in my case it will cost me about $ 10'000 - $ 11'000.

Inner thigh lift ..... never done at the same time as outer thigh lift. Don't know about detailed costs right now as we did not speak in detail about this as it will be something down the road and not of utmost importance.

Lower body lifts - would include butt lift etc. .... he does not do them unless your BMI is well below 35 preferably at 30. He says risks are too high for surgery (heavy bleeding) and proper healing in heavier patient.

Upper back lift .... very complicated procedure, he does it only as a last resource if all other options are explored.

Dr. Toy does not recommend "medical loans" as he says they're ridiculous in interest charges. He suggests using line of credit if possible.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
