I have very mild sleep apnea..... the respiratory doctor that the weight wise clinic sends most people to told me not to get a machine if I was going to keep losing weight in the near future.... but if I wasn't losing weight or I became pregnant then I need to get one for sure
My husband has very bad sleep apnea..... the tech said he was one of the worst she has seen lol..... He has tried about 4 different kinds of masks and 1-2 sizes of each kind..... he found it was just trial and error..... the right one he found was obvious after the first few nights
Definitively if you feel they are just trying to make a sale go somewhere else..... also I have heard a few places rent machines.... not sure where but that might be an option if you are going to be losing weight fast and if they think your sleep apnea is weight related...... mine is weight related.... my husbands is not, they feel even if he was perfect weight he would still have at least moderate sleep apnea and probably has since he was an adult
On the bright side, my husband has had chronic neck pain and headaches for 15 yrs.... we always thought it was from multiple injuries he has had on his head and neck...... but once he got the right mask he very rarely has a headache now....but still the neck pain from injury...... but the worst part of the was the headaches and they are pretty much gone and he says he feels better than he has in years for feeling like he go a goodnights sleep and has more energy though the day
Hope that helps a bit
My dilemma now is I am waiting for a date for surgery but now I am being told because I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea I need to be cleared before they will proceed with my surgery. I truly am pulling my hair out. I feel like I am being forced into buying a machine that did nothing for me. To be honest I have lost 35 lbs in the last 9 months and my sleeping has improved immensely. However no mater what I have tried to tell my nurse she says I must have a clearance letter now from a respirologist before they can proceed. I have not even seen a respirologist so not sure why I new I have clearance from one?
To say the least I am a bit frustrated and upset because now my surgery date has been delayed until I get this clearance. I see the sleep doctor on Feb 1st to discuss this but that is still another two weeks away.
Just thought I would share my story too.
I felt very pressured into trying the machine and found that the guys at Sleep Therapudics where more interested in making a sale than anything. They out right lied to me after my trial period and tried to scare me into getting the machine by saying i was at risk for all kinds of conditions.
I felt alot better because dr Modi went over my results at my last appointment and confirmed the fact my results weren't that bad. Notion that was going to interfear with surgery. So if it makes you feel better take the results to another Dr to check over.
Bottom line is that in my opinion if you were getting good sleep before, you can try a machine but if after your test period thing still aren't going good with the masks and your sleep isn't any better it might not be worth it for a mild case.....
I am new to writing on this forum, however have been reading posts for quite awhile as part of doing research in regard to the vsg surgery.
I am in the program in Calgary and am feeling pretty discouraged as the AHS apparently has no money in the pot right now for surgery in our region. The classes are great but it's a lot of time invested for no guarantee of even being approved to be put on a wait list. It is great to have the resource of the classes but I have struggled for over 30 years with my weight; I haven't learned anything earth-shattering in the classes that isn't basic common sense for the most part.
I am feeling frustrated and want to start to feel like I am living my life to the fullest, instead of waiting for the potential to wait some more.
Right now I am hoping to pull together the funds to go to Mexico. My research to date is leading me to go with Dr. Aceves
I have a question for any of you that have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and use a cpap machine.
I was recently diagnosed with a very mild form of sleep apnea. My doctor reccomended a trial of a cpap machine.
At first i was given a nasal mask. I wasnt able to wear it longer than about an hour at a time, I would wake up and get frustrated and take it off. Last week I was given a full mask and same thing, I cant get used to it.
Do any of you have any suggestions for getting used to using the machine? I know in the long run it will help me and i would love a full nights sleep! Did you have as much trouble with it as I am?
Thanks!!

Haven't been on here in forever! Happy New Year to you as well. I wish you continued success, I have kept tabs on you and have found you very inspirational ever since I first joined the site. Thanks for that!

I don't necessarily have a goal weight before surgery, just because I don't know how long that will be. I'm hoping to do the 1-2 lbs per week, but as long as I don't gain, then I am happy!
I've been on a plateau on or around 40 lbs down for the last few weeks and am finally just getting over that (fingers crossed for my weigh in this week).
I think the drs at the clinic just don't want to see you gain, and are even happier if you do manage to lose!
Thank you very much, this was very helpful.
congratulations on the pounds lost already.
Is there a goal weight before you go into surgery?
Hello!
That's unfortunate that your appointment was cancelled..hopefully if there are any other cancelations they will call to get you in right away. I know that one of the nurses is away for the next few months, so that could be why.
I'm not sure what you mean by the papers say its not an easy way to get surgery. If you are medically able to, and you stay on track (ex. don't gain a lot of weight), then it shouldn't be difficult. It is a long process, maybe that's what the letter meant.
Well, I haven't gotten super far, but here's what I've experienced so far.
First you will get started on your modules (if you haven't already started). They are full of good information.
At your first meeting, you will meet with your nurse. She is your case manager and your go to person. She will go over your lab results (or give you a request for blood work if you haven't already gotten that done). She will get you started with journaling as well as any other things she wants you to do.
Then you will meet with a dietician who will determine what amount of calories you should be consuming daily, as well as some type of a meal plan.
After that I met with the doctor (one is Dr. Kwon - who is my family doctor, and the other is Dr. Modi - who is my doctor at the clinic...both are really great people. I'm sure whichever one you are placed with, you will like!). She goes more into depth with your lab work, asks you a bunch about your medical history, asks what your plans are (surgery or not), etc.
Once she approves you for surgery you will meet with your surgeon. On that day, either he, or someone from his team will go over each one of the surgeries including the pros and cons. This is done in a group session. After that you will meet with him and he will answer any questions and ask you some questions regarding what you have decided on.
Then, you will book a bunch of appointments with the ladies at the front. You will be booked for a scope, appointments with your dietician, Dr and RN. You will also be booked in for two pre-op classes (These appointments are usually pretty far in the future, as surgery waits are currently about 7-8 months once you are on the waiting list).
Somewhere in there you will also meet with a psychologist (and psychiatrist if it is determined that you need to see one). I haven't yet met with the psychologist, as my appointment was canceled and rebooked for next month.
Now that I am on the surgery waiting list, I will continue meeting with the Dr, RN, Dietician and Psychologist.
Hopefully that gives you some idea of what to expect. I'm still fairly new to this whole process, but I will try my best to answer any questions you have. If I can't answer them, I'm sure one of the other lovely ladies (and a few men) on this site will have some wonderful answers for you!

Now that I have read the article, it looks like the process has changed a lot since I had my surgery. All a good thing! My journey to getting surgery with Dr. Nohr will probably differ from yours. I will be interested to learn about your journey and what you all have to do from this point to your surgery date and beyond. Good luck and keep us posted.
