Hi there, yes I did get a referral from my Dr. However the surgeon I met with denied it.
on 1/26/16 1:34 pm - Calgary, Canada
I had the sleeve on January 7, 2016 as I researched and was not too happy with the vitamin deficiencies and dumping syndrome. I already have issues with certain foods and dump and my surgeon right away said NOPE, sleeve it will be!!
So far I am doing well and starting the soft food stage and get full on only 1/4 cup of canned salmon or 1 oz of steamed salmon. hard to believe as I could eat a big chunk of fish or meats.
Doing your research of both procedures is a good thing and do a pros and cons sheet and see what best suits you.
Good luck!!!!!

They do revisions in Red Deer as well! Not sure if all 3 doctors do them but at my last appointment it was mentioned that they've been doing a lot of revisions lately.
Start with your family doctor or GP giving you a referral. I know that's how it is in Alberta anyway. I'm sure other provinces are the same? What province are you in?
Go to albertahealthservices.ca and go to Calgary Adult Bariatric Specialty Clinic. All the info. is there. I printed off the referral and brought it to my family doctor. They decide who you will see. I was referred to Dr. Debru but the other docs there might do revisions as well. He has done the old VBG to bypass revisions and is doing mine. It doesn't sound like it's his favourite surgery to do! :0) but he will do it if the conditions are right. Now I wait.......for a surgery date. It's harder than I thought it would be! But I am grateful I've come this far. I would def. consider the Mexico thing as I've heard some really good stories! Best of luck! Keep it touch!
Help!!!
I am a diabetic, well controlled by minimal drugs. I recently seen Dr.Karmali. He asked me what surgery I was thinking and I said either the sleeve or bypass. He said both are good surgeries, my choice. My family Dr thinks the sleeve is all I need. I was hoping that Dr Karmali would have told me which one he thought would be best but he wouldn't so since I only need to lose about 60 pounds, can anyone tell me what surgery they had and why.
Thanks
Hi. That's awesome! So glad you got approved. Who are you going through in Calgary? I didn't think there was anyone here doing it. I'd like to give it a shot anyway. Thanks again.
Yes I did see the surgeon and have been approved for revisional surgery. I am waiting for a surgery date. In Calgary we have to go through nutrition and informational classes etc. and I had to have an upper GI done so that has all taken 8 months so far. I also have a Haitial hernia that needs repairing which can be done at the same time. Perhaps request to be seen at Calgary clinic? I know classes are online starting this January. There must be something they can do for you? To just be denied seems harsh. Good luck! Keep in touch.
Hi, I wish I would have got Dr DeGara. After 8 months I finally got a consult date but it was with Dr. Vu. Never heard of him before. Long story short he said because I didn't suffer from diabetes or sleep apnea that it wasn't worth it for me to have a revision. What a crock! I was so angry. Still am. I felt like he had his mind made up about me before he even spoke to me. He didn't ask me anything about what problems I am having. Anyway, good luck to you. I hope it works out for you.
