Hi everyone! My referral was sent in last Tuesday last week. I phoned the clinic in Medicine Hat today and they have me there! I was told that I have about a 10 month wait to get into the actual clinic but I would hear sooner for orientation group. The process has started and am excited even if I'm in the beginning stages. I've picked up a book on Bariatric surgery written by a doctor out of Toronto so I have the Canadian perspective and I am expecting WLS for dummies in the mail next week. I will read these cover to cover. Any other suggestions to get me prepared and ready for first contact? Greatly appreciated! Have a wonderful day!

Hi Tara,

mI read your blog yesterday!

thank you so much for sharing. I am having my very first appointment at the Ted Deer clinic in a few weeks. It's a group session I believe.

I am wondering how the entire process works? Am I approved for surgery based on acceptance to the clinic? Or is there an approval process to go through?

I am very familiar with both the lap band and sleeve as my brother in law and sister, respectively, had both of those procedures.

I have a BMI of 39.6

hypertension

ovstructive sleep apnea

Can you help me out at all?

Topic: RE: Timeline from surgeon appt to actual Surgery Date? - Edmonton

The clinic is telling patients 12-14 month wait but it really depends on your surgeon. I signed in September with Dr. karmali for veg and I have surgery next month (I was a cancellation) but I was still near the top of the list

Topic: RE: Surgical Assessment today

Hey,

I have been through the 3 classes. I went in not quite sure what to expect but they are very informative sessions, they last about 90 minutes depending on the questions /comments. What I enjoyed most was hearing other peoples questions, concerns, thought, fears. Things I never thought about were answered in those classes.

From what I can recall at this moment the classes covered what to expect after surgery, eating, exercising, self care, post op follow up, day of surgery, plastic surgery afterwards, dealing with cravings, last meal mentality....

I think you will enjoy the classes, the nurses,  psychologists, and dietitians lead the classes.

I hope this helps!

Topic: Surgical Assessment today

I had my surgical assessment today and have signed my consent for surgery!  My next steps are the 3 presurgery classes my first one is not until April of this year.  Is there anyone on here who had completed the presurgery classes and can give me some insight?
