men: you are so damn lucky!!!
My doctor's staff faxed in my referral to the Red Deer clinic in October 2012.
I called in January just to check in- and at that time they said they had never received it. They needed 'proof' that it was originally sent in October.
My doctor's staff kindly resent the original referral immediately-- showing the original October date of referral. The Red Deer Clinic staff told me I was then added to the October group on the wait list.
Fast forward to this Wednesday-- after trying to call several times, no one answering the phone, one unreturned message, I finally spoke to a Gen Y who informed me that she doesn't know what happened but the mistake was never corrected on their end (maybe it was one of their staff who is now on maternity leave who made the error I was told??).
They need 'proof' again. My healthcare provider kindly called them AGAIN to sort things out, and said she felt like she was being interrogated. Since when is one healthcare professional going to lie to another healthcare professional? I think it's called ethical standards of care.
I tried calling the clinic first thing this morning to follow up. No answer. I left a message asking who I can write to as part of outlining my concerns with how they appear to have mishandled things.
Nothing frustrates me more than lack of competency. Let's see how long it takes them to call me back-- if they call back....
Our tax dollars hard at work.
Hi, Im from Calgary too. I had my RNY gastric bypass 15 months ago in Medicine Hat, I know last year we were trying to put together a meet up for Calgary people who would like to go for coffee, but the timing didnt seem to work out very well. I hope that we can get a little group together as I think it would be wonderful to be able to have people going through similar experiences to share. Im sure my husband and "normal" friends are tired of me talking about my surgery and changes to my body etc LOL It would be fun to have local support !

After the group session and my first appointment with the nurse, my next was with the dietician. From there they scheduled me in to see the psychologist at the beginning of May, and then I meet with the surgeon at the end of the month and with the dietician on the same day. The order we have our appointments in obviously differs, but during the time from first meeting to surgery we will have met with pretty much the whole team.
Edit - the nurse did tell me to start the one cup diet after my visit with her - one cup of food 3x a day. The dietician actually told me to eat more than that (!!!) saying if we have one cup then I could go over by eating dark green or watery vegetables. She also wanted 2 snacks during the day. That might jut be me, but she I'd say that the dietician group was trying to change things up and putting emphasis on eating 5x a day.
The vary first time you go to the clinic it is an information session with a bunch of other people. The first one on one appointment at the clinic is with a nurse where you go over your history and and what you are looking to get out of the program. Most people are put on the one cup diet at that appointment. After that you make another appointment with the nurse for about a month later then you make your appointment to see the surgeon, psych, and get put on the list for a gastroscopy.
Losing weight is tough but it's a bit easier when you have support. Message me!

They told me everyone's time from first going in to actual surgery is different. 6-16 months is what they said. I was referred in August 2012, had a call from them about 6 months later to go to an information session in March and then had my first visit with a nurse at the beginning of April.
I just started my journey with the Red Deer clinic, so I don't know a whole lot...what sort of questions do you have?
