I had surgery in red deer on Jan 26. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Hi all, I'm new here, not sure why I haven't joined before but, I digress. I had my initial intake appointment at the Edmonton Clinic in December of 2015... I have jumped the hoops, done the work, the classes down about 8kg overall and trying to target ~1700 calories a day. All the disciplines have signed off for my referral months ago, except for the for the Psychologist... I have an appointment tomorrow (Oct 21) with her... fingers crossed she gives me the blessing.
But to complicate things and the lifestyle aspect, I took a unfortunate mis-step in Mid August, fell, ended up breaking my foot bad enough to require 2 surgeries (I am 9 weeks post surgery for surgery number 1, and was totally non-weight bearing for the first 7 weeks). I am just now starting to take some wobbly steps. Now for my question... has anyone else suffered a majorly debilitating injury that drastically limits mobility, and the ability to exercise for an extended period of time? How did you handle it? How did you cope with any regained weight while waiting for the blessing to move forward? At this point I'm trying not to gain back too much...
Thanks all :-)
HI There!
Have you taken any of the Weight Wise modules offered? http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/info/service.aspx?id=100 7965 If not, I suggest that you do. The clinic in Edmonton, at least, really recommends that you follow the guidelines set forth in those classes. Half a plate of veggies, 1/4 plate of meats/alternatives and 1/4 plate of grains. Servings for snacks should include 2 out of 4 food groups, servings for meals should include 3/4 food groups. Your dietitian can do a Medgem test for you to assess how many calories you currently burn at rest. You can also go online and find Basal Metabolic Rate calculators like this: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ to get an idea of your base calories used before any activity each day.
I hope that helps!

Hi,
I just started the weight wise program and have completed my initial intake appointment. I am not scheduled to see a dietitian for 2 months, seems like forever. I am anxious to get this process started!! Can anyone tell me what type of "diet" they recommend? I have started journaling but I am unsure how many calories I am supposed to be eating as well as food to avoid? I am not required to lose the 10% of my weight before surgery but would like to if I can. Any tips or advise you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!

Can you please provide details regarding the time and location of this information session? Thank you in advance!
Hello All!
On October 13, the Edmonton Bariatric Support Group (EBSG) will be hosting a presentation by the University of Alberta Bariatric Support Garment Clinic staff.
The Bariatric Support Garment Clinic specializes in custom fit garments for obese individuals. Here is a link to more information.
It's a first of it's kind clinic in Canada and only available in Alberta. However, they are working to open up their services to all Canadians.
At the presentation, two custom fitters from France will be in attendance to answer your questions.
We encourage everyone to come out and learn more about support garments and how they can assist you in your daily activities.
For more information on EBSG and the meeting details, please visit our Facebook group.

Hi there!
I have been in the program a year and now just waiting on a surgery date.... I too tried every other diet, would lose weight and gain it all back again then some.... so I hear ya. I also would emotion eat as well. But you have to think of it as a lifestyle change....I had to see a nurse, nutritionist every 4-8 weeks and also had to see a psychologist as well. You find out alot about yourself and why you got to where you are... i've lost between 60-70 on my own since my highest weight last August. Having the surgery isn't giving up. Your being given a tool and properly utilized it'll work for you. When I saw a nutritionist they told me how I should be eating ie: how many grams of protein, fats, carbs etc and show you how to portion things out. That made a huge huge difference . Good luck with your decision. I know I made the right one for myself ?
Cheers!

Hi, I had my sleeve surgery January 7/16 with Dr. Debru. I was with the WL clinic in Calgary and love the clinic. I have learned a lot. You would need to get a referral from your family dr. and then the clinic would have to look into you issues. Some have had revision and had to be sent to Edmonton for the revision. In Calgary we have 4 surgeons. Hope this helps

Hello Catherine! Congratulations on your life-changing decision. I'm from Calgary and started with assessment sept 2015. I attended all the classes required and did a lot of online work wise. Met with nutritionist, dietician, rn's and psychologists. After our group completed the mandatory attendance for 3 of the orientation classes, the program offered these classes online! I do have co-morbities but I wouldn't say that I was fastracked. I was called to set a surgery date on June 14/16 and could have chosen a date 3 weeks from then but decided to wait until September 16th. So, for me, the time was less than a year. I was already tracking my food and exercise on fitness pal. The dietician had access to this and I saw her 4 times. The Calgary program increased its staff in Jan 16 and from what I understand, the rn's, dieticians are swamped. I don't know how many surgeons in Calgary perform WL surgeries but there were a lot of dates I could have chosen from. Good luck with your journey!
