Hi, I am new to this and have a initial appointment with Dr. Davey in a couple of weeks. Any information on this doctor or his proceedure? Also, how long of a wait is it usually before you get the surgery? Cindy

Firstly expect to wait atleast up to 2 years if this is only your first appointment. That is if you get approved for surgery even..but there could be many appointments to follow the 1st before you actually get a surgery date. As for his procedure he does the lap band and the rny both open and Lapriscopic. Excellent surgeon though and excellent surgery team. But definitly do your research.. Best of luck.

Dont give up, there is also a surgeon in Medicine Hat "Dr.Nohr" he only does the Open RNY and Dr.Farries in Red Deer. So talk to your doc and tell them to refer to them also..but even still a very long long wait..it is frustrating but worth the wait once it is all over.

Hey, I had my referral sent to Dr. Davey (and Birch)'s office in December and still have not heard ANYthing, and same goes with Dr. Nohr. I know that Dr. Nohr got my referral, but just have not gotten my date yet. A lady who got her referral at the same time as me got her date shortly after, for Oct 2008! With either Dr. Davey/Birch OR Dr. Nohr, you will be VERY lucky if you got your surgery in 2 years. If you weren't able to get any cancellation dates, you'd be looking at probably 3-5 years. Dr. Farries works a bit differently. He ONLY takes new referrals once a year (think its the beginning of May), and takes on only as many as he can do in a year. So if your doctor (or their nurse) is willing to stay on the phone all day trying to get through for you, that's a good option. I personally didn't like the sound of him. Too many hoops to jump through. Including LOTS of pre-op visits, which isn't a problem when you live in Red Deer or near by, but when you're from out of province, it's not that do-able. That's all why I gave up on my RNY dream, and now am getting the LapBand. 14 days! Woooo! Good luck, hope I helped (and didn't depress you with the wait times!) p.s. who are you going to see in Bonneville?

Hi, I am going to see Dr. Davey in Bonnyville, he goes there once a month. Will know more after next week. I see you are in Saskatoon, there is someone there who does lap band? I really dont know much about that, but would like to compare the two. Also time does factor into it for me too, once I made up my mind to do this step I want to do it yesterday! thanks, C

Hi, please keep me updated on what you find out from Dr. Davey. I'd be curious to know what the wait is for a RNY vs a lapband with him. Is it considered a consultation, what you're going to see him for next week? That would be nice, considering the wait for one is usually so long! No, no lapband surgeons around here. I'm going to Ontario. If I stay around here for a while, after my first fill, I'll probably go to Calgary for fills/adjustments.... better than flying to Toronto for it, and at least in Calg. I have friends I can stay with. If you have the money, you can get the lapband in Ontario in about 6-8 weeks. I hear ya about the wanting it yesterday thing! I thought the 8 week wait I had was gonna kill me, but it's really nothing when I consider what I was facing with the RNY. Luckily time flew by, and now I just have to deal with the liquid (optifast) diet for 13 more days. That's what's the worst part as of right now. Good luck, and yeah, please let me know what happens at your consult.

To your response - I spoke to Sask Health and unfortunately Dr. Colquhoun was the doctor in Saskatoon that did this surgery, but he is on medical leave and will retire soon and there is no one at the moment that conducts this type of surgery in Saskatchewan.

My initial referral was made to Dr. Davey in 2003. I had my first appointment with his staff Oct 31/05 and am scheduled for surgery next month. So for me once I actually got my first appt the wait was not too bad. I do know what you mean about wanting it yesterday. I had thought about this surgery for a long time before even asking for a referral so when I did I was so anxious to get it over with. Since Dr. Birch came on board and some changes have been made - ie funding, etc, things seem to be going faster for Dr. Davey's clinic these days. I don't think there is any difference in wait time for RNY vs Band with Davey/Birch. Once you see them you and them decide which is the better choice for you then you're scheduled. IMPORTANT NOTE: Dr. Birch did tell me that this is the only place in Canada now that you can get the lap band done under Alberta Health Care. They are doing a study to see if it will be feasible for other provinces to offer this choice through their health care as well. As someone else said to you - the person that's going to ON - there you pay yourself. I didn't know Davey went to Bonnyville for consults - that's interesting so definitely go see him - good luck. In regards to info on the surgeons: I'm pretty sure that someone told me Dr. Davey has been doing bariactic surgery for around 20 years. He is also the chief of surgery at the Royal Alex in Edmonton. In 2004 Dr. Birch joined the Royal Alex and Dr. Davey's bariactic team. There has been articles in the Edmonton Journal but I couldn't find on the web. Here are a couple of links to articles about Dr. Birch when he joined the Royal Alex and Dr. Davey's clinic. Dr. Birch is described as one of Canada's leading minimal assess surgeons. http://www.capitalhealth.ca/NewsAndEvents/NewsReleases/2004/Minimal_access_surgery.htm http://www.expressnews.ualberta.ca/article.cfm?id=5986 http://www.capitalhealth.ca/NewsAndEvents/NewsReleases/2005/Obesity_Minimally_Invasive_Surgery.htm Hope this help out.
