Red deer WLS timeline
Hi,
I was given a referral to the Red Deer. Bariatric center on Dec 5th from my family doctor and am just wondering of anyone who has been referred within the last year or so And what kind if timeline I should be looking at. I don't know much about WLS my husband and I have been going through fertility treatments for 7.5 years without any luck and my doctor now suggested bariatric surgery, so I'm very excited about it, very nervous, not just for the surgery but knowing we will be putting our baby making on hold for at least a couple years, but I think hearing other peoples timelines will give me a more realistic idea of what I could be looking at.
I was referred in April of 2013.. got contacted by study being done by the Alberta Governement called the Evolution Study.... upon agreeing to take part in their study, I got "bumped" up and went for my orientation in August of 2013.. first Appointment in September.. Approved for surgery mid December 2013. Surgery for the sleeve was on April 9th, 2014. My surgeron (Dr. Farries) is the one that has the longest wait list for surgery dates. hope that also helps you out! I know for me when I started the process I was very anxious about the timeline as well. I wasnt that concerned about the actual time .. just wanted to be informed so I knew what to expect really. Good luck to you!
one more quick comment...
you dont HAVE to put your baby making on hold.. in fact.. the fertility rate for women AFTER weight loss surgery skyrockets! Many many many women will show up for the one year post surgery either pregnant or with a brand new baby in arms. I have a friend who was told that she could not have children. She had the sleeve surgery five years ago.. she now has a four year old girl, two year old boy and five month old baby boy... this might be the solution to both of your medical issues!
Thanks Shelly. Thats fantastic about your friend makes me very hopeful! By putting on hold I was referring to the fact they want us to stop trying to concieve unit about 1 year to 18 months post OP so although I know its absolutely worth it lol after already trying for this long 2 years longer feels like 10 years away lol. But knowing that this may be the solution to our fertility struggles is pretty exciting.
I was referred in July of this year. Joined the Evolution study in august, had a meeting with them in september, orientation in october, and my first nurse meeting on november 8th. dietician in december, nurse in January, and I have my first meeting with Dr. Menezes on tuesday, so we'll see what happens then. I also have a mental health appointment booked for march (that one could be interesting )

Wow!!! Thats so exciting congratulations! Im not sure if you would have any idea about this but, I am starting a new diet next week just because I have been gaining even more weight and am just tired of it so I am joining ideal protein which I have had big weight loss results on before (just never kept it off) but my worry right now is, will they count what I weight at my first evolution study meeting, since its at the bariatric center in the red deer hospital, as my starting weight or is my starting weight what I weigh at my first nurses visit? Im just worried I will lose too much weight and ruin my chances at having the surgery. I'm just so uncomfortable I started insulin and have gained almost 30 lbs in 3 months!
