Surgery is Scheduled for March 18th. I'm so flippin nervous. I was up til 3am this morning reading everything I could and watching youtube videos on all the complications that could arise. Probably not such a good idea but I like to be informed, not that I didn't do my research before I booked it. If complications arise after I return home will the hospitals even care for me and is it covered? Would love to chat with others from Alberta about their experiences. Thank you.

I am sure your family doc would have no problem caring for you as you will need to do routine blood work and the hospitals will care for you should you need them no matter where you had your surgery.

I had my surgery on March 18th a year ago -- it's a GREAT date!  :)

Thank you! I hope she doesn't have an issue. I'm nervous to even tell her. She's not for bariatric surgeries. How did your surgery go? Did you like Dr Joya? I've heard lots of great things about him! How has your weight loss been? Sorry for all the questions! LOL

Hi there, I am a nurse, so if anyone is going to make themselves nuts before a procedure its me.  Good luck on your surgery, just do it, don't look back, I did mine 7 years ago this month, and am considered a success story because I have kept the weight off for more than 5 years.  I have no regrets other than I didn't get it done years ago.  Some days I am still a fat person in my head, and 7 years later when I walk by a mirror I still look into it in awe not believing that it is me. I went from a size 26 to a size 4, for some reason I have maintained my weight but am a size 8-10 now.  Its fine, a size 8, I ll take it.  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much for your response. You have put my mind at ease! Congratulations on your success! That's amazing. I hope I can be your story one day. Starting the liquid diet Tuesday. Keeping my fingers crossed that its easier than I anticipate.

Congrats to you!  One step closer to the new you.  I for one am jealous as I am still waiting for a surgery date.  Quick question for you.  Where are you getting your surgery done at?

Hi Shelly,

I am getting it done by Dr Joya in Mexico. I was in the weight management program here in Calgary 6 years ago for two years and didn't get anywhere with it. I joined it again last year and now have to go through the whole process again. Went to the generic meeting and have a appointment booked for this Thursday. I know if I go this way I'll be waiting another 2-3 years and am not guaranteed to have surgery. In fact they told me at the meeting that 90% of patients never get the surgery. So I have decided to pay to have it done elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply Treena.

I figured that was the case when you were asking about if something went wrong, would you be able to get medical help here.  I have been going through the Bariatric clinic in Red Deer and so far so good.  I am approved for surgery and am just waiting for the date.  Another person that I met at the same clinic as we have had multiple classes and appointments that have falled on the same date and time has been in the clinic the same amount of time as me (Started in September 2013) and she just got the call that her surgery is scheduled for Mid April so I know the light is at the end of my tunnel.  I applaud you for taking the steps to the better you no matter what.

Good luck and keep positive.. There is a great saying.. "Worrying will not prevent any of the bad from happening.. just prevent you from enjoying the good that is happening".

Hi again Treena,

have you done your research on this doc in Mexico? I know you can have complications from surgery doing it anywhere, but.... Have you asked people on the main boards, or the board for the type of surgery you are going to do ie RNY what they know about him and his clinic.  Have you thought about getting it done atleast somewhere in Canada?  it is an income tax deduction.  Good luck my friend, I have never had even one regret about having done it....BTW which procedure are you having done?

I have done my research. Everyone has nothing but great things to say about him. I'm having the gastric sleeve done. I have thought about getting it done somewhere in Canada but its double the cost. I researched him 6 years ago too when I was thinking about it so this is a long time coming. LOL. Thanks so much, starting my liquid diet tomorrow. Nervous about that too.
