I had VSG surgery in montreal on nov 26.13, I am just going through and filling out the form for "out of province physician services" which I will then send into Alberta Health Care. I know there is also a form for "out of country physician services".  AHC does want to see a receipt that is detailed, breaking down surgeon fee, hospital charge, anesthesiologist fee etc.

On the AHC website they state that the claim can take up to 16 weeks and you have 1 year to file from date of surgery.  Two women I know who had their VSG surgeries in Mexico told me that they got back between $1600 to $1800 each.  I am in St. Albert, if you need a link to the website sent me a message and I will send them to you.  Also remember you can deduct a portion on your income tax return depending on you and your spouses income.

I reposted this repky from the general forum and tried to clean up the line breaks.

I had my reconstrive surgery done in Montreal 3 years ago (everything was covered except the breast lift), as I am a former Montrealler.  The breasts weren't covered, and I took my receipt and filled the whole amount on my income tax, and got appropriate reimbursement.  Here in AB no reconstruction is covered, and I just had my thighs done last week in Lethbridge.  Im just going to file the whole 7200$ this time.  Good luck, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Unfortunately, it's not true that no reconstruction is covered in Alberta.  In fact, the pannus removal and breast reduction are both covered by AHS.  http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/what-is-covered.html

Cheers!

Could I get that information. I had the sleeve done on Aug 2013 and didn't know I could do that and would like to submit my bill to alberta health.

thank you.

good morning,

I have included the link to the Alberta Health Care page that has the forms for both out of province and out of country claims.   the address is:   http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/submitting-claims.html

If you have any additional questions let me know, you can also call Alberta Health Care at the number on the link and they were very helpful in telling you what you needed to include.  Have not received my cheque yet, the person at AHC said it would take 6-7 weeks.

Which surgery did you have?  are you happy with the results? My problems so far have been mostly severe acid reflux, as well as throwing up a bit from eating too fast, not chewing enough or eating too much.  Takes time as well as continuous conscious effort to learn how to eat properly with a new stomach size.  Also finding out that certain foods are not for me at this time (vinegar, soy sauce, raw vegetables and a few others).

If you have any other questions let me know. Spring is here I hope.

Hi Robert, I had the Gastric Sleeve. Best decision I have made. I am down 100 pound and almost 9 months out. I have another 20 or so to go. I have had no issues at all. Love my sleeve.

Just going to work on this paper work to get some money back! Thank you for this link.

Glad to hear from you, extremely happy that your sleeve and and post surgery life has gone well.  I myself have lost just under 100 lbs at 5 1/2 months, when I add in the 50 lb loss before surgery I am close to 145 down since mid Sep 2013.  As a result I am in weight loss heaven.  A few issues regarding acid reflux etc., but hopefully things will work out in time.   Will let you know when I get reimbursed from Alberta Health.  Once again very happy to hear you are doing so well.

well, I saw the reply to my post about reconstructive surgeries and how they are not covered.  I went to see 5 plastic surgeons FIVE, they ALL don't want to deal w AHS, as they are NOT PAID what they all think they are worth.  Even in Quebec I had to pay all kinds of extras, etc.  I can only imagine those who are willing to do surgery to get peanuts from AHS, would have an extremely long waiting period or other hoops to jump thru.  I love my surgeon and pay again in a heart beat
