Quick question - Dr. Birch group appt.
on 11/4/13 2:42 am - Edmonton, Canada
Hi guys,
Can anyone tell me if Dr. Birch approves you for surgery in the group appointment?
I have been referred to Dr. Birch and that my appointment is a group appointment for my husband and I, along with 4 other referred patients, and their support person. Is there another appointment after this, before you get put on the wait list?
I have been through all the WW modules, seen the nurse, nutritionist, etc, but I'm just wondering if this another 2 appointments or just one.
Any information would be good - I'm a planner.
TT
I think how they do the appointments now is you have a group appointment where you all see the surgeon and he goes through all the options and then you see him one on one to discuss it and make a decision.
I am not exactly sure if this is the case because when I signed there were no group appointments
Hi there
The first part of the group appointment is to discuss the type of WLS you and the others are interested in. You and your spouse are then asked to meet with the Doctor one on one--in my case I met with Dr. Birch's "fellow". If my memory serves me correctly, he will ensure that you have the appropriate support from your husband and understand what you are committing to.
This will be your last appointment before approval unless you require additional tests (which you will be told about at that time.). In my case I was asked to have a (I think it was) barium x-ray of my esophagus followed up by an endoscopy procedure. It was only after these two tests (and the discovery of a large hiatal hernia) were done that I was placed on the waiting list. I understand I was quite quick in getting the two additional procedures completed but it did take an additional month. Then, the waiting on the wait list begins. I'm unsure how long the list is now but several of us have been waiting since April with no date as yet. All the very best of luck to you as you continue through this process!
