Had my first app with nurse at the clinic to do the assessment. Have an app. booked with the doctor at the end of April to discuss surgery options, progress, risks etc...
My question is what are your thoughts on the sleeve gastrectomy and is there the removal or partial removal of the grehlin hormone? What were peoples experiences good and bad? I was told this surgery is relatively new (5years) unlike the traditional RNY. Thank you

I saw Karmali today and I was leaning towards sleeve, but am going to go for RNY unless he finds out there is other issues related to my hernia then he will do sleeve.  What he said to me is if you have a substantial amount to lose that RNY is better.

I am about 4 months out with the sleeve.

I can tell you this, the fact that I never feel hunger is great.  It helps to keep me in line and I see no negatives so far.

Once or twice I have had to force myself to eat because I know I have to, but for the most part I love the sleeve.

I'm 28 months out from having Gastric Sleeve and there isn't a day that I regret my decision. I love it and I love what it has done for me.

I had one bout of dehydration at around the 3 week mark and other than that my sleeve has been very good to me. You have to learn to chew your food very good and if you forget your sleeve will let you know by what is called an stuck episode, basically your saliva lies on top of the stuck food so you when you finally do vomit it's basically your own saliva, we call it the slimies. My body signals me when I'm full by one hiccup and that just started after starting solid food after surgery. I'm glad I chose the sleeve but everyone has to chose with will work for their lifestyle.

They say it's new but gastric sleeve was initially the first step in the DS procedure that started in the 1970 in European countries. So if you do your research you'll find lots of good things.

You will lose roughly 80 + percent of your stomach and once it's gone it's gone there is no getting it back a but on the upside the side they remove is responsible for producing ghrelin and therefore after surgery you will no long have a hunger signal. I've heard all good about the sleeve but you have to choose what will work for you depending on the amount of weight you want to lose. Statistics show 30% weight lose with Sleeve and 40% with rny, this comes from the clinic. Your will and strength to be a success will determine what you accomplish in the end. Many of us with the sleeve have accomplished more than that percent.

Good Luck with making a choice.

Kee.

Thank you for the feedback it is really appreciated! I did not know the sleeve had been around that long. I am going to more research. A huge problem is that I always feeling hungry. Thankyou again this helps.

The loss, or at least reduction of physical hunger is the huge plus of the sleeve when compared with RNY or Band. I was always hungry and had no full signal. Any of the 3 would help with restriction to small portions, but not being hungry is magical.

The other benefit (for me - may not be an issue for you) is that the sleeve is the only WLS that allows occasional use of NSAIDs. I have arthritis and chronic bursitis - and had severe sciatica before my surgery. The thought of having to get by without pain meds gave me a strong push toward VSG.

Karmali told us that the sleeve was designed as step one of a two step process...step two being the RnY...for super morbidly obese patients.
I had the sleeve. I rarely have "hunger". My husband alsohad the sleeve, still had hunger. Ghrelin can be produced in areas other than the stomach. He also had the RnY, as it was always planned that he would do two steps.

As for NSAIDs, that totally depends on your surgeon. WWC is 100% against them in all surgeries, at least from my and other's experience.
