Anyone out there who did their wls in mexico want to answer a few questions?
Hi all,
I have been on the fence for a few years now and have pretty much made up my mind in which direction i want to go.
WLS in Mexico as i just dont want to wait the 2 years here in Alberta.
So questions are can you take medication postop as i am on several different ones (heart attack in 2010) and type ii diabetic.
What is the recovery time for different surgeries.
If you went to Mexico which Dr. did you use and what is your experience and cost.
And can you claim the expense on your tax return (Canadian).
i will probably have more questions later
thanks for your time
Malcolm

Yes, you can take medication post-op, although I haven't needed to take blood pressure or cholesterol meds since about a month after my surgery. I've also pretty much totally eliminated pain meds, which I took for arthritis, chronic bursitis, fibromyalgia and sciatica.
I don't know the recovery time for other surgeries, but I felt pretty normal other than some fatigue and itching from the adhesive where my drain had been by about a week out. At a month out I was thrilled to finally be allowed back in my aqua size class.
I went to Dr Aceves in Mexicali and recommend him to everyone that shows interest in the surgery. My cost was $8750 US, plus flights, some meds, Barry's meals, some drugs to bring home and tips for the driver and the housekeeping staff at the hotel we were in the night before surgery.(the hotel itself is part of the package)
My experience was excellent. The hospital is extremely clean and well run, the care exceptional and Dr Aceves and his assistant Dr Campos are professional, pleasant and very competent. Both doctors popped in to see me at least once a day and were happy to answer any questions. I was particularly impressed that Dr Aceves put in the effort to learn my husband's name and chatted with him during his visits, too.
I'll be talking about the tax issue with my GP in the next few weeks. Apparently, if he'll write a "letter of medical necessity" I can claim at least part of my surgery on our taxes.
What else would you like to know?

Will Dr Aceves be doing your revision? If so you're going to LOVE him and Dr Campos.
I'm in Edmonton. Where are you?

My pre op diet with Dr Aceves was 10 days of an Atkins type diet of high protein low carb.
I was able to have my surgery within a month of making contact with Dr. Aceves' office. We flew Edmonton to San Diego on a Tuesday, was picked up by the hospital driver and transported to the hospital in Mexicali for pre op testing. We were then transported to our hotel where we spent the night before being picked up early Wednesday morning and taken back to Alma Mater hospital for my surgery. My husband stayed with me in the hospital room for the required 3 nights, on Saturday we were driven back to Dan Diego airport for our flight home. Easy peasy. Surgery plus hotel plus transport to and from San Diego included in price of 8750.00.
I'd do it again and again in a heartbeat!
