Just wondering what they all go through during the 1st meeting with Dr Karmali

My husband is coming with me..... but I would like my mom to go also since she will probably be the one caring for me after while my husband works away.  She is not the most excited about the whole surgery idea, and is trying to get out of going...... wondering how important it is for her to hear the info first hand........ don't want to insist and then she think it was pointless to go..... trying to avoid a lecture later lol

Thanks

I can tell you what my first meeting with birch was like,
At first a small group of us were brought into a room together. Dr Birch went oner the 3 surgeries they do at the Edmonton clinic, he gave us the pros and cons of each and answered any general questions. Once that was done we all had time to meet with him one on one and ask any other questions we had.

The one thing that threw me was when he asked "are you ready to make a decision". I said yes and then everything started to move forward from there. It still took 6 months until I got the surgery but I knew it was going to happen at that point.

I hope that helps
Thanks

Do they go through the do's and don'ts of post surgery and recovery process..... or is that learnt later in the pre-op courses they have you do

Just wondering if its worth my mom coming..... she does have to drive 3.5 hrs to get here...... and my husband will be with me

You learn all the dos and donuts in the classes not when you meet the doc.

I think it would be bennificial for her to come with you to the first appointment because thats where they actually explain the surgery.  If you want her to learn about the dos and donts you would want her to attend the "Preparing for Bariatric Surgery" class that they will schedule you for the day you have your first appointment.

there is a 3 hour pre op class you will have to attend after getting approval from the doc, that covers the post op care, food choices, what to do at the hospital and when you get home etc...that sounds like it'd be more beneficial for your mom to attend.  My husband came to that with me, he also came to the meeting with Dr, Birch but i think he retained more info from that pre op class
