I just saw Dr. Karmali today and Im approved for surgery. I was dead set on the sleeve but after talking with him Im starting to lean towards the bypass. Can I get some opinions from those who have had the bypass and why they choose that vs sleeve ....or why some choose sleeve vs. bypass? I dont have any co-morbities other than high colesterol.

I was told that it would be 3 months after the endoscopic test. I talked with them and explained I work as a bus driver and would prefer to have the surgery in the summer. So we scheduled my test for April and they say it would be 2 to three months after that. Im sure I could get in sooner but, I really like being able to not stress about having to take a couple weeks off work. I am also happy that I have time to really make my mind up on which surgery I want. :)
Hi - I didn't really have a choice because my surgeon only does RNY's. I am not sure which I would have done if I had the choice. Their are pros and cons to both. Personally, I am very happy with my RNY. I had didn't really have any co-morbities either except sore knees, and legs. I haven't had any complications so far. I do not dump. I can eat almost anything. I have lost 117 lbs in almost 1-yr. I am allergic to aspirin so I was never able to take NSAIDS or Ibprofen anyways, so this wasn't a huge issue for me. I understand that RNY may be better for people with big amounts to lose, yet I see people losing large amounts with the sleeve too. The whole rerouting of the insides can be a scary thought, so I can see why some would prefer the sleeve because there is less rerouting. All I can say, is do your research. Read up on everything you can. This is a decision you will have to make yourself with the help of your doctor. So far, knowing what I know, I would still do the RNY for me. It has completely changed my life for the better.

I guess the malabsorbtion could be a problem, but if you take your vitamins, and get your labwork done regularly, I think it should be alright. I am very vigilant with taking my prenatal vitamins, calcium citrate and B12. My labs have always been good. I can't answer how things will be long term but I know I will always be aware and get my labwork done if I don't feel right. For me, I wanted the malabsorbtion as well as the restriction that RNY provided. If I was going to go through any weight loss surgery, I wanted the best chance of succeeding and getting off most my extra weight and keep it off. There are some very successful stories out there for the sleeve too. I don't know as much about the sleeve so hopefully someone who has had that surgery will post some info. Keep reasearching so you are comfortable with your decision. There are pros and cons to both.

I dont have it until april 4 , I asked to have it a bit later because I want to have the surgery in the summer. I drive bus and I want to be able to take a while to not only heal but to get use to my new body before going back to work. If I did it during the school year I would feel so bad about being out of work that I would rush back.
