core morbidities
So after reading this in a recent post, i have some questions for those that have all ready been approved or had surgery:
"Also once referred to to the surgeon by Dr. Modi doesn't guarantee that you will be going ahead with surgery. Through out my experience with the clinic and the 3 years I was a patient there I have witnessed and seen lots of patients make the initial referral only to be told by the surgeons that they didn't think surgery was the right option for them and that there were people out there that needed the surgery to save there lives due to extremely amount of co-mobilities."
Just how 'unhealthy' do you have to be?
I have sleep apnea and joint pain, but that is about it. My bmi is 47, and i have been over weight since childhood. I will not lie, ihave pinned a lot of my hopes on having surgery in the next few years, I know for sure i can't afford to pay for it myself. Reading that sort of made me come back to reality and realise that after all the waiting and hoping that there is the possibility it might not happen.

I have to say that comment wasn't written in haste it was just my experiences with the clinic, I met such wonderful people through out my journey and am ever grateful for what they contributed to my journey but many times my heart hurt for I was approved for surgery and they were not.
Many of the people I met went through the clinic but just couldn't come to terms with the reason that they were obese such as emotional eaters that didn't change their habits, sexual/physical/mental abuse issues that surgery can't take away. Stress eater that couldn't follow the guild line. All these people too had joint pain as well as I did due to their obesity. Many had sleep apnea, high blood pressure controlled with meds, diabetes, cellulite, fatty livers and some of the ladies had poly cystic ovarian syndrome. The clinic has a chart usually posted in the surgeons room with what they consider no co-mobilities to stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3. Not all obese people have co-mobilities and for the ones that don't blessing to them, if we all only be so lucky. Some patient I met too excelled with their weight loss through out the program and were turned down for surgery cause they were able to achieve weight loss on their own sadly now they have gained all their weight back cause they couldn't maintain their habits. The surgery is just another tool to help you achieve a better life but trust me you have to work at it each and every day. A friend once said oh ya it's the quick fit, it's not and I work as hard now as before I had my sleeve surgery done.
Stay positive and follow everything the clinic ask you too.

I agree with the above lady. I think a lot of it has to do with the mental health of a person. I have anxiety but its under control , I also have past abuse issues, was activly buliemic in the past, and Im a recovering alcoholic (although I have quite a bit of time sober). I think it all comes down wether or not you are ready for a change and are willing to start working hard to make those changes. In the program I have met a lot of wonderful people but, some of those people you can see right from the start are just not at that point yet. They believe that their "locus of control" is external.
Dr. Modi pretty much told me ....as long as they see you putting the work in and making life style changes and have lost some weight and are maintaining the weight loss they will put your referral through. I just got approved for surgery yesterday by Dr. Karmali.
