So had my VGS surgery yesterday morning with Dr. Mitchell. They were able to do the procedure laprascopicly and not open. This morning I go for my swallow test ad I am looking forward to drinking water, all I he had so far is  my liquid medication and it HURTS going down. IS this normal? it feels almost like it gives me a headache at the same time. How long will this last? Also, my incisions don't hurt at alll but side feels like I just got done doing 100 side it ups and hurts to breathe in deep. Just wondering if this is all normal!
Thanks

I am thinking it's all normal.  You just had major abdominal surgery.  My lap incisions didn't hurt either.  But they have to poke through muscle and pull you around so this may be the tenderness and pulling you are feeling.  Your throat could be sore from the tubes.  The headaches could be from the anesthetic and trauma your body has gone through.  Give it a few days and I am sure, you will be feeling better.  WELCOME to the other side!

Absolutely normal. You may also have some bouts of pain in your left shoulder from gas trapped under your diaphragm, nausea, a really sore throat (from the tube they put down your throat) and exceedingly wobbly knees. Also totally normal.

This will most likely be pretty much over by day 3, so ask for pain and nausea Meds as you need them, move around as much as you can, and follow your surgeon's refeeding plan exactly - you're on the loser's bench now! Congratulations!

Oh, you'll be learning to take tiny, tiny sips, and need to be doing so pretty much constantly for the next while. A straw helps a lot for me, some plans don't allow them. Try different temperatures to see what works best for you. My TinyTum likes hot or cold but not room temperature, loves filtered water, very dilute fruit juice, broth and herb tea, hates apple juice and is totally miserable if I send down tap water or anything containing Splenda or aspartame. (whi*****ludes every protein shake out there and Crystal Light)

Greek yogurt is going to be your new best friend - Costco's Kirkland is the best price in town. (3 for $7.89)

Welcome to "the Other Side."

Hello I may not  using proper protocol but had to write when I saw Kelly-AnneH'S info and her age.
When I was 50 in Nova Scotia my DR. told me I was too old for any weight loss surgery. I see that this may not in fact be true and I am excited that I may have a chance. I may be 56, but I think my body would be a lot 'younger' without this weight. Please let me know how to proceed with finding out more. I really really want this. Thank you! (I am in Alberta for the summer, but can move to any province)

Thanks for writing with your encouragement. I  think Nova Scotia is a bit behind the times with recognizing weight as something than can be treated. I am going to do a lot of reading  and decide what route is best. GOOD LUCK Tuesday! K

Your gonna find good answers for what you need to do  im sure of that  i know alberta wait times are not as long as nova scotia  i think really  any doctor would see this is something you really feel  you need and  i think in alberta you really wont have the problems like back home ,    they seem to care more about  us  here then home  and as i said 56 is young  still   you have a whole lifetime left  this will only add to your new beginning  and thank you for the well wishes tuesday  im sure its just to go over my papers  either way  its a start on a road i too feel i need ,    you never know  maybe  when you  get thru the doctors and they see how much they need to help you  we maybe having the surgery on the same day   you just got to keep the faith   positive feelings  you took your first step already  by knowning whats best for you

For the first time in  a long while I have hope. Did you have to go through the program I just read about that is offered in Edmonton or is that what you are possibly starting?Do you know what surgery is best for you, or does the Dr. decide based on your health? The thought that I still can get help is making me so excited! I'll be looking forward to hearing about what happens Tuesday. Someday, I may have my own Tuesday to wait for. Thanks again k

I actually went to Mexicali, Mexico (very safe, very quiet, unbelievably clean hospital and highly respected surgeon) to have my VSG done. The price was $8,750 plus airfare, tip for the driver, 1 meal and the PPI I bought while there to cover me for my first 3 months. (so about $150 US)

My sis (she's 59) was sleeved the same day and used airmiles for her flight, which saved a chunk. (flight for my hubby and me was $1300)

My experience was excellent. I had some pain and nausea for the first 3 days, then none at all. My incisions are almost completely healed and I feel perfectly normal other than having a very small appetite. (as in 1/2 cup of food fills me for hours) Not bad for being only 3 weeks out from surgery.

There are other options out there - free taking the longest and having the most hoops. There are other self-pay options - some cheaper, some more expensive, Personally, I'm VERY happy with my experience with Dr Aceves and wouldn't change a thing.
