Is self-pay Vertical sleeve surgery possible in Alberta?

Hi
Is Vertical sleeve surgery possible in Alberta? (I grew up in the prairies, and would feel comfortable having surgery there.)   If so, would I be put on a waiting list, or could I pay for it and avoid the wait?

All advice welcome!

Thanks very much!

As far as I know, it is not possible.
The WLS is only being done through the few programs in the province and there is no self pay option.
You would need a refferal to one of the doctors or programs and follow the guidelines to get the sleeve done.

not through self pay no....but you can get a refferal to some of the programs in Alberta

I'm in Grande Prairie and I went through the Weight Wise Clinic in Edmonton

get your doctor to fill out the referal form and then you'll be put onto a waiting list to start clinic appt's in edmonton...

good luck!

Thanks, Teenuh.  What was the time frame from your referral date to the actual sleeve surgery date?

My initial appt in Edmonton was Dec 2011 and I'm due to have surgery this July (so 7 months)
My time from getting on the list to when I got the call for the appointment was 11months, but i've heard they are speeding things up even moreso now.  I had a friend who's wait to get the call was just over 2 years and another year in the clinic.

Self pay wasnt an option for me....because the only place i knew that we could do that was Mexico and that just makes me nervous....although i have had a friend who went there and so far she's fine....but just personal preference i suppose.

to make your clinic time go a little faster you could start the weight wise modules as soon as possible...check your local health unit to see if they offer them, i know they do in GP and a minimum of 4 are required...more is better... they are very useful...and i heard a rumor there is supposed to be 3 post op classes/modules too...I'm hoping they come to GP as well...

I havent had to do any weight wise progams being from out of town, I see my dr(from Edmonton) who visits Bonnyville once a month and as long as I journaled and saw dietician that's all that was asked.  As of Mar 2 he said my surgery date will be 8-10 weeks, still waiting on call.... refered to him last May saw him In sept surgery soon I hope.  Went faster than attending the clinics I think.

Yup i think it just depends on the clinic you attend....
the info i posted above was for the Weight Wise clinic in edmonton at the Royal Alex.
they do a lot of work with you to make sure its a long term thing...i really enjoy the classes...if they are available near you i'd say it coudlnt hurt to take them.
awesome on the upcoming surgery!

Encouraging.  Is your surgery the 'sleeve', Mamatb?
Thanks,
