Sleeve vs Rny
I , too, chose the sleeve.
I didn't want to have malabsorbtion, dumping syndrome and re-routing and creating a new 'pouch'.
I think to my future (which is why I'm doing all of this) and what the outcomes could be. I hated the idea of doing something good about my weight and then possibly battling keeping good levels of vitamins/minerals etc.
Right now I have enough of a problem with the sleeve trying to get in my calcium pills, my vitamin, my b12 and extra vitamin D. Plus my own meds for thyroid which cannot be taken around any other meds. I cannot IMAGINE if I were on higher doses of any of these and required more pills.
When my b12 was low I felt LIKE CRAP. I thought it was nutritional but it turned out to be the B12..easy fix yes...but what a challenge.
I think there are more pills/supplements to take with the RNY.
Sooo...if you hate taking pills, this is just a heads up. Then it's also tricky to get the food and water in...add pills to that and you're already full, or choosing food over pills and putting yourself in an unhealthy situation.
Just my two cents. I love my sleeve too, plus I know if there's ever a need in the future, the RNY can still be done. But i'm not using that as an option. I'm going to work my butt off to get where I need to be and then reasonably maintain that (and my health!)

My surgeon has me on one prenatal vitamin a day and 1200-1500 mg of calcium a day. I take B12 every other day if I remember and iron may be an option though so far, I seem to be getting enough through food and the prenatal. Tha'ts all the vitamins I take. I had blood tests done 3 weeks ago and everything seems to be okay (meaning I haven't heard anything backt), I am not sure what kind of vitamins other RNY surgeons are prescribing their patients.
I thought that with both the sleeve and RNY absorption issues could arise?

I think I was told with the RNY many people needed the extra salts etc for the bile/gallbladder minerals. Or it was a high occurence.
I've not heard that there are any significant statistics with malabsorbtion with the sleeve.
There is nothing bypassed, the food sits in the stomach just like it did when it did before surgery. It's just the stomach is long and skinny and thus smaller.
Sounds like you're doing really well with your regimen! :)

I know many successful RNY peeps. Absolutely a great choice too!
I'm happy that I chose the sleeve over the Band. My doc had recommended the band but I'm SO thankful I didn't make that choice.
I never thought to ask any of them (RNY friends) if they were taking the salts.
I think, actually, it was in some of the pre-surgery info as well when they were telling you what to be prepared for post op, and how to be careful to get your nutrition in and around your pill regimen.
Hi - I didn't even think of the band either. I think that if the sleeve were an option at the time for me, I would have had a tougher decision between it and the RNY. My surgeon mainly does RNY's so the sleeve option wasn't even on the table. So far, I have NO regrets at all with my decision to go with RNY. It is a personal decision forsure. I have had zero issues with food intake, leaks, gallbladder, dumping, etc... In fact, I feel completely normal and it is hard to believe that my insides have been rearranged. Other than different stomach sounds and the full feeling I get, I don't notice anything different.
So all is good. And you are right when it comes to RNY having more malabsorbtion issues then the sleeve. I knew that with all the research I did. That fact just slipped my mind I guess. Because I feel so GOOD! :-)
Either way, I am thankful I have had this opportunity. It has changed my life SO MUCH for the better. I will always be indebted to my wonderful surgeon and his expert skills.

I am going for a sleeve layer this year ....obviously I don't have first hand knowledge of either. I have done some pretty extensive research and the malansorbtion is what really turned me off of the by pass. My mother is in the medical perfession and has had many patients who had by passes years ago and now come to her with ostioperosis and other issues from lack of vitamins/minerals. Many of them take the Vitamins like they were told to however it is a constant battle to keep their levels up and now that they are getting older it is starting to cause serious issues. ( this is why they come to my mom for IV treatment) this is probably not the norm ...just she only sees the people who are having problems ...other wise she wouldn't see them in the first place. However because I have seen these issues it really pushed me to make my mind up on the sleeve.
I choose the sleeve because of the low complications rate and the no dumping or mal -absorption. Your body adapts better and much faster. The weight loss is comparable and in some situations better than the Rny. Your body functions regularily. Your stomach still functions normally but it is just that much smaller. You get no hunger pains, no cravings and the best part no grillian or verry little. There is lots of research. Go to Weight No More Consulting websight and you will find all the research you need.
I hope this helps.
