POPCORN
Hi Mel,
What a great question!!!
Popcorn was always one of my favorites. I had my surgery (RNY) in August of 2010 so I'm about 18 months out. I loved buttery popcorn tremendously before surgery, but I changed it up dramatically once I started the program.
I didn't want surgery to begin with. I lost my first 100 lbs with the Weight Wise Clinic program. So I was changing my life a long time prior to surgery. I still loved popcorn but I changed it to unsalted, plain popcorn. (sounds gross, but after surgery your tastes change tremendously). It was HEAVEN to pop up a little bit of popcorn in the microwave. About a 1/4 cup in a plastic container with a lid would make about a cup of popped popcorn.
After surgery, you need to be careful. Test a little bit first.... I waited six months after surgery, just to be safe. You'd be surprised how your tastes will change after surgery. I loved coffee but couldn't drink it for at least a year after surgery. (it caused massive dumping syndrome on me)
I still have to be very careful with the hard kernels ( I just don't eat them) but the soft fluffy ones are great!!
You can even change the flavour a little.... I like to sprinkle parmisan or romano cheese on top. It adds a little protein and is a great flavour. I even used the SF Jello crystals to sprinkle on top as a sweet treat... Wonderful!!
But as with anything, moderation is the key. There are some tastes that you will LOVE prior to surgery, but absolutely hate after surgery.
Be courageous in trying different / new things in very small amounts about six months after surgery... You'll be surprised! You'll be amazed at how good small amounts of new foods tastes.
I never was a huge fan of 'Oriental' cooking.. but about a year out of surgery, my hubby took my to a Thai restaurant and I fell in love!!! with Spring Rolls.... I love making them for myself at home... I can put whatever I want in them. My tummy doesn't like starches, rice, pasta, potatoes, etc so I don't put rice in them... I use lettuce, cabbage or bean sprouts with chicken or whatever protein I have in the fridge....
It's amazing, the changes that your body makes... we just have to be taught how to listen to our bodies.
Good Luck with your journey... I wish you all the success in the world!

Thank you for your reply Melody. I love popcorn at the theatre...especially from Carnival in Red Deer. Someday I wouldn't mind having it again...of course not the big bag that I used to eat but just a taste.
However, maybe my taste will change.
I also tell myself that if I never have junk again but i get to my goal, then I will be happy. Being healthy and active would be more precious than all the popcorn in the world. lol

Yes i had the sleeve. I had to wait a number of weeks to not eat anything with seeds or hard bits.
i imagine that YES it is a bit different with the RNY because the new pouch is created and the opening between that pouch and the intestine is also created. Therefore to be treated a little more carefully for a time.
Also it can be a little more finicky I hear.
The Sleeve you still have your natural openings, you just have to wait for your incision ot heal...and then can pretty much explore and many people find they can eat almost anything. (My dietician would agree that most of her patients enjoy all of the same foods as before).
I find I just get gassier easier, and high fats and high sugars make me feel nauseated (for instance a small dairyqueen blizzard makes me feel like i ate a vat of icecream with a whole birthday cake and topped it off with a two litre of coke...yuck!).

I eat popcorn as a treat once in awhile. Maybe a handful when we go out to a movie. After a handful I am full. I do make sure to chew very well.
I will also pop the occasional 96% fat free microwave popcorn and sprinkle some Molly McButter on it. Again, I only eat about a handful and then pass off the rest to my kids. I also bought some Molly McButter chedder flavour which I love, down in the US. I find the US has a larger selection of suger free foods to buy. It's nice we are only 3 hours away from Great Falls, MT.
I did see in the paperwork I got from my surgeon/dietician that not all RNYers can tolerate popcorn. I seem to have no problems. In fact, I can eat almost anything! Even a little sugar. It's good and bad. The amount I can eat is SO much less. Though I am constantly thinking about what I am putting in my mouth because I know that it will get harder as time goes on, and I want to lose as much as I can while it is still fairly easy.
