FitBit??
For sure!
Moving from Texas to Calgary was a bigh change. And here I feel like a fish out of water bing larger. It seems like everyone here is so fit, and they go skiing and ice skating and are active. It was nice Monday to be surrounded by people that understand what it is like to be bigger and that suffer from some of the same afflictions as I do caused by being overweight.
The more support the better!!

I am from Houston, and it has long been one of the nations top 10 fattest cities.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that as a culture there we eat out A LOT!
Food is a lot more affordable there, and so is eating out. There is so much of a selection there and a lot of buffets too! Great place to go if you like food, but it makes it hard to eat healthy if you are tempted by the amount of places there.
Also I think that there is not a lot of people in Houston that walk places. I am guilty of driving to the corner store to pick something up. It is just a way of life there. We drive everywhere. Here there are far more people that walk or ride a bike. They are just overall more active.
I am hoping in a few years I am able to do things with my daughter up here like going skiing and riding a bike- I have bent rims since I was like 16- and Ice skating. I can't do that anymore because my ankles arent strong enough to hold me.
I am glad that she is going to grow up here and hopefully be more active and not have the same problems that I do.

I agree with you about wanting to be able to do things with my kids as they get older. I bought a bike a few years ago (I never learned to ride as a kid!) and my huband taught me to ride it. I'm still not super confident in traffic but I like riding it. I bought a bike that was better built for my size. I think I embarrassed the poor sales guy asking him things like weight limits etc but I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to fail me.
I had no idea Houston was on a 10 fattest cities list. I always think of the obesity epidemic as being equally Canadian and American but you're right there are a lot less buffets and smaller portions in restaurants here (although we're still eating too many calories I know).
I am equally guilty of driving everywhere. I think it's more because I want to "hide" in my vehicle than an aversion to walking!
Did you have a chance to call that Chronic Disease Management Program that they gave us the handout on? I tried looking up the website on the handout and it's a broken link. I'm going to call and get more information on it and where the exercise classes are offered etc. I think the more effort I put in to the things that they direct us towards the more likely they will be to select me for surgery.
