Post Ops I need advice! (RnY but others can respond)

Okay here is my dilemma that I need advice on.

I had a surgery date for RnY at the end of January but I ended up having a reaction to a drug and gaining 13lbs in a week and getting hospitalized in November which postponed my surgery.

My parents are going to be helping me after surgery get my child to school, baby sit, help me, etc. I did not know when my new surgery date would be, they only said maybe sometime in March or April. My parents decided to go on vacation from March 16-23rd. They booked all the airplane tickets, etc.

I got a call today that they are getting me in as a "pick-up" date March 15th. This means the surgeon was not originally going to be in OR this day but now suddenly is and I was squeezed in. I have until Monday to decide if I want to take that day or not.

I guess what I am asking here is how long did you need help? (Especially if you have kids). Also, did you just need someone to care for kids, or did you need someone there with you too? If I send my kids to friends houses after surgery but do not have some one here and am home alone will I be fine? If I did that I will have surgery on a Thursday and be home alone starting Monday, so that would be 4 days post op.

I really want this date, I need to get it done and over with and already post-poned my date once. I also will not know when I will get a date again if I do not take this one.
What do you guys think? I appreciate input.

That is a pretty big rock and a hard place you have found yourself in.

I can only speak to my experience as a sleever and a single girl with no kids, but I will say that I was a zombie following surgery and there is still some ongoing questions as to whether I should have been released at the time I was. I was unable to stay awake and was on oxygen right up to them kicking me out of the hospital.

I had my mum come and stay with me following surgery and I needed someone there. I needed someone who could stand long enough to get my super tiny meals together. She also drove me around because it was a week before I could drive myslef and I couldn't wear regular clothes for about a week.

So... my advice is take the date and do whatever you need to to make sure that your kids are looked after by someone other than you because you are not going to be in the condition to look after anyone but yourself and even you are going to need some help.

Seriously, take the date and make it work. Surgery is the very best thing I have ever done for myself, don't deny yourself getting started in your new life.

How long were you in the hospital for?
Why could you not wear regular clothes for a week? Was it that the incision was painful against your clothing?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am really curious about what the experience will be like.

I was in the hospital for two nights. I had surgery on Wednesday morning and I was released on Friday afternoon.

As to why I couldn't wear regular clothes for a week, when I had surgery they banged up my ribs which I had broken years ago, doing things like trying to put on pants or anything that required me to bend was effing excruciating. I had bought a couple dressed in advance that I could just pull off and on over my head and in May, it worked.

I did have some super low yoga pant capris that I could wear as long as I folded them over and kept them on my hips. My incision next to my belly button was the first one to heal fully and I think it is probably because I was really careful not to let anything rub during that first week.

Another good tip- get a body pillow. I am not a big mover when I sleep but the slightest shift in position while my stitches were fresh woke me up, but as soon as I got a body pillow that I could wrap my arms around and throw a leg over, I was able to sleep uninterrupted.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I have not been super active on this site in the last while but I am hoping to be able to share my story more and more the further I get out from surgery and the more confident I become that my weight loss is not going to disappear any moment!

Take the date. If you don't it might be forever before you get another chance. I also had sleeve surgery done and had complications but was able to come home 5 days after to an empty house but I only had me to worry about. I managed. So I guess if you are able to have some one care for your child you will only have to worry about yourself. I slept non stop for the first week or two. My energy levels were low but I was able to fix my little fluid snacks and shower and stuff. Just needed to rest in between. Don't stress over it too much and I bet things will come together just fine. Surgery is probably the biggest thing that's ever gonna happen in your life next to having your children. Good Luck and Congrats.

Kee.
