Question regarding the Food Journal

I did go through the Weight Wise program in Edmonton so guidelines are different.

I was allowed coffee right up until I was put on the pre-surg liquid diet and even after that I was allowed one cup of black coffee.

The worst part of my recovery in the hospital after surgery was the caffeine withdrawal headache. I was crippled by it.

I was told that I could have skinny lattes after surgery because the protein is crucial.

I would check in with your dietitian to be sure because they know what's best for you.

I am envious of your coffee allowance....but I know that it will be worth the wait to have it as a treat one day....far in the future. Yes I will definitely ask the dietician when I see her in March.  I am also going to ask the surgeon some thngs on Monday.  Thanks.

I am curious about something. I have not been to the Orientation meeting that is scheduled for the end of the month yet so I am wondering about your words like "allowed".
Is this somethign that if you dont follow that you feel bad about, or something that you will get kicked out of the program for?

Hi Kellie,

I am not sure about Calgary so I can only speak about the Red Deer clinic.  I have to keep a daily food journal that is checked at each weigh in appointment.

I don't think I would necessarily be kicked out of the program if I didn't properly follow the food program but I do forsee lectures and a longer time in the program if I don't follow it.  Meaning if I didn't cut out the sugar, cheese and pop like the doctor wanted, I could see him saying that my hearts not in it and can I really make the changes needed to have ths new lifestyle.

Therefore, I am strictly following the list of foods I can and cannot have.

For example:  My partner was trying to be sweet this morning and bought me a juice at the convenience store. I had to remind him that juice has just as much sugar as pop and I am not allowed it.  Yes, i could have had one bottle maybe but I don't want to because I am the type of person that once I have it, I crave it and I will continue to drink it. I don't want to set myself up for failure.

I hope this answers your question. It might not be as articulate as I want it to be but it's early in the morning. lol

That makes sense. I am an all or nothing kind of person.
The reason I asked this is because I have heard so many people say that has been through the program that each "class" starts out with 300 or so people and throughout the program people drop like flies and ends with 50-60 people. I was curious if peolpe get kicked out of the program for having a donut or something or if they drop out on their own.
I am hoping that the orientation session later this month has a lot of the answers.

I am waiting to get in the program in Edmonton, I should be getting my call any day now.

One thing I have been doing is tracking everything I eat on myfitnesspal.com, the food DB they have is fantastic with lots of Canadian content and I can enter everything on my Blackberry, but they can do Android phones and iPhones as well.

you may want to use other tools there but the food tracker is great and track everything you will need and you can print off the repors and journals.

I just wanted to add my two cents about the Edmonton clinic- It's amazing and if you follow the guidelines and ask lots of questions to ensure that you are knowledgeable about your care, as each of us is different, you will do really well.

I will be eternally grateful to the clinic for providing me with the tool set they have so I could accomplish my transformation.

I just feel that it is important to reiterate to everyone when it is all said and done, you are the one doing the work, whether you have surgery or not. EVERYTHING and EVERY CHANGE you make is on you to carry it through... Surgery is a phenomenal tool but it is only effective if you make the necessary adaptations in your lifestyle to make it permanent.

If you have any questions at all about the clinic, please feel free to ask and sorry if I got preachy there on you. It's just super frustrating to meet people who think that the surgery has failed them when they had made no moves to be successful.

Hi Chance,

I don't think you were preachy.  What you said was right.

If I decide to eat healthy now but then pick up a Big Mac after surgery, it is my fault.

To me this journey is a complete lifestyle change.  I will be a different person after this surgery.  In Red Deer, I am looking forward to taking advantage of any help I can get.  I am so excited to meet the dietician.  Any advice or therapy to help change my life, I will accept.

I am going through a mental change too. I am trying to stay positive on thi one cup diet but I am also working through self esteem issues (this will take time).
I want to be a better person. I want to be more active.

The benefits of this change outweigh the junk food for me (despite my cravings for sugar).  Every time I get hungry I remind myself about the end result.  Would I rather be overweight and insecure for the rest of my life? Or would I rather be fit and happy...doing things I haven't done since childhood because I have been to overweight to achieve them.

Thank you. :)

Mel, I also went through the Weight Wise program in Edmonton and not only had the pleasure of having sleeve surgery but meeting some great people along the way who have inspired me and gotten me through my little tough patches and Chance was one of them.
For jorneling I just wanted to say not only to journal your food and liquids but moods and emotions as well. It will help you pin point head hunger from real hunger and also help you get to the root of why you eat. I was a bit of an emotional eater, which I didn't really realize until i started the clinic.
I wish you all the success in the world and I do hope that you are able to meet and become friends with some of the group in Red Deer.

Kee.
