Length of time before surgery

Hello.

For those who have had surgery, how long did you have to wait before you had it?  To clarify I mean from starting the program (first appointment, one cup diet, etc) - to when you had surgery. I have talked to some and it has been about 9 months in the program before surgery.  Anyone have a different story? Longer? Shorter?

Just curious.

Hi There,

I asked the same question on my first appt and the nurse told me that the fastest they did the surgery for someone was within 6 months and the longest about 1.5-2 years. She said that if you lost the weight ahead of time so that the surgery was safe then you decrease the length of time waiting for the surgery.

Good luck with your appt tomorrow!

Hi.  Thank you.  I am so excited for the appointment.

6 months isn't bad.  i wouldn't want to wait for 2 years but I would do it for the life changing opportunity.

I heard that I must lose 10 percent of my body weight before surgery and that the 10 percent is counted from the first appointment, not prior.  Is that true?

My letter I got yesterday told me that I would need to loose 5% of my total body weight over the 3 month program.
What is your appointment for tomorrow?

My appointment tomorrow is my first one at the Red Deer clinic.  They sent me 3 forms to fill out and bring with me.  The lady who phoned told me that I was accepted in the program but that the assessment tomorrow would be to get to know me and see if I want non-surgical help or surgical.  She said that due to my high BMI I meet the requirements for surgery, it's just up to me whether I want surgery...which I do.

5 percent is good.  I have heard from some Red Deer patients that the surgeon here requires 10 percent.

Is this your first appointment with a doctor or your first meeting with the program where you have to start keeping a journal and stuff?

It's the first meeting with the program where I get the assessment with the nurse and start my 1 cup diet and weight loss journal.  I have been told I meet with the doctor about a month later.

I am on day 10 of my 1 cup thing.  I have found I am not hungry, which surprised me.....It is the bad habits of eating just beacause you do, or walking by food and you automatically just grab it and put it in your mouth...So it is the habits that I need to break and not let food rule me but me rule the food.  It s challenging for me also because I have kids in many multiple sports and we are always on the go, to planning will play a huge....huge part in this.  My first challenge was on the weekend with my son having 2 out of town games and them landing in between  lunch or supper.  You get to the rink and everyone is eating fries, gravy, poutine, burgers, pop, candy, and wow it gets a bit overwelming.  I powered through it and just kept drinking my water.  I want this really bad. I am almost 46 yrs. old i have 3 children 20,13.11 and they are very athletic and I was once too.  I want to not only support them by watching their sports I want to be involved.  I have to say that I have very good support here in Camrose.  I have a mom on my 13yr olds basketball team who is a nurse and we were talking the other day and she has phoned me and now I not olny have support in Red Deer I am in inrolled in Camrose in the Weight Wise management program.  She says she will help me with whatever she can do.  So I am excited for this journey, a bit scarred, but want it so much and hoplfully I find strength that i never knew i had.

Good luck to all of us through this Journey

The Red Deer clinic didn't mention anything to me about a percentage that I had to lose. If you find out Mel, could you please let me know if they said 10% for sure?

When I went to my first appt in Red Deer it was great but I found the eating plan vague and the no info on how much I had to lose. I thought it was more about reaching a weight where the surgeon felt comfortable doing the surgery without any risk to damaging your liver etc.  The nurse told me I could only eat 1 cup at each meal but not much else.

On Jan 16th I meet with my Surgeon for the first time, Dr. Menenzes, and then on Feb 14th I meet with the dietician.  You would think I would meet with the dietician first so that I could get the eating thing down and make sure I am eating the right kind of things.  Instead I find myself eating only meat so that I feel full longer.  They said to eat protein and eat it first.

What are you people eating that have already started the one cup meals?

I'm also going to meet the surgeon on the 16, I have to be there at 8:30. I was told at my first appointment that you do in fact have to loose 10 %.

I'll probably see you there, as they told me that I will watch a film with 5 other people, and then we will all see the surgeon separately.
