Hi,

Just new to the forum tonight and hope I can get some suggestions on where to research surgery options.  I am in the Weight Wise program in Edmonton and have been approved for surgery.  I am now waiting for a date but haven't decided on which surgery.  (no to lap band).  The doctors have said I would do fine with either surgery (bypass or sleeve) and are leaving the decision up to me.   I have until my Endoscopy to decide.  If anyone has any suggestions on more research websites/blogs/books,  I would sure appreciate it.     What an incredibly hard, life changing decision !

Thank you.

Like you I really struggled with my decision and the Dr. let me wait until the last minute to decide.  Initally the band was the only thing that I thought was reasonable.   The more I researched it the more I realized that it wasn't as rosey as the advertising makes it seem.  For me, bypass was never an option.   I didn't want to deal with life long malabsorption of vitamins, no more pyloric value, dumping, and having my intestines re-routed.....so that only left the sleeve.  It is a very personal decision.

Google is your best friend....and you tube.   I spent hours/days on both when I was trying to decide which surgery I wanted.  OH was also helpful to read about real life post-op good/bad/ugly stories.

I agree with WeightWiseDeb - Google and YouTube are great.  Also read the past posts on this (Alberta) forum, and the Ottawa forum (they have lots of RNY surgeries).  When you go through the surgical forums here on OH, read with a bit of caution.  At the Weight Wise Clinic, we're lucky - we have a very thorough program that covers information, preparation, aftercare.
Use Google Advanced Search to narrow down your searches.  Oh, and when you're reviewing everything keep in mind how to want to live - what you want to eat, is malabsorption going to be an issue, what medical concerns do you have that are not weight-related?
Good luck!

Thank you for your advice.   I have been using google, but haven't yet used you tube.  I will check it out.  I have the pre bariatric surgery course soon and think that will also help.  Thanks again!
