appointment with Dr Davey

So after 7 months in the weight wise program and losing 5% of my  body mass I have been referred to see a surgeon.  My appointment is next Friday. I have read on here that in Edmonton most folks see Dr Sharma first before seeing a surgeon.  I wonder if they have missed something with me.  Also, I haven't heard very much about Dr Davey.  Does anyone know what he is like?

When you were referred to a surgeon, did you see anyone besides your dietian and nurse?

I have seen an internist Dr Yaltho a few times and the psychologist.

He might ask for a barium swallow and endoscopy before the final approval on surgery. (that's what dr. birch does for many) .  Then you'll be put on his list for a date :)

 I already know what a barium swallow is like but I would be a little nervous of an endoscopy.  Not looking forward to that one.

Dr. Davey was my surgeon.  I had my VSG 2 months ago.  You are lucky.  He has the shortest waiting list.  It is a little ironic getting WLS from a Dr. who is quite overweight himself.  He  is a very nice, soft spoken man.  He presented the options to me and let me choose what I was comfortable with.

I'm glad to hear that he is a nice doctor.  That helps me feel a little less nervous.  And I am very happy that he has the shortest waiting list.  I think I would prefer the VSG too but I'm not sure what he will say about my type 2 diabetes.  I don't know if it is the best choice for me or not. 

He is definitely very much in favour of the RNY.  He calls it the 'gold standard'.  He recommended it for me but I didn't want to have anything to do with re-arranging my insides and the life long vitamin malabsorption problem. 

If you read the VSG board you will see that lots of people with type 2 diabetes got off all their meds within a few weeks of having their VSG.  Do  your research and then pick the WLS surgery that you are confortable with.

The reading I've done indicates that many type 2 diabetics eventually go off their meds at different post op times. (Some within a couple of weeks!)  I have a follow up appt with Dr. Birch sept 19th as he wanted to give me time to think the options over. I am leaning towards or have decided on the VSG. My diabetic specialist sounded like he really recommended the roux en y ("Gold Standard). the good thing about the VSG is that it can be revised to the roux en y if need be. You have to pick what is right for you, what you feel comfortable with and will happily live with. Thinking of you Christa!
